GamesCom 2010: Info Roundup

With all of the news coming out of GamesCom about The Old Republic this week, combined with the fact that the public is getting their first hands-on sessions with the game, there is new information and video all over the web. We wanted to try to distill it and bring all of the interesting bits together in one place for the convenience of our readers.

So, keep an eye on this page as we’ll be adding to it on an active basis, and by all means if you find or see something that we don’t have here, please let us know via the feedback form at the bottom of this post! Just a note, we’re not going to be linking to anything that may lead to any site that hosts things that breach the Game Testing NDA.

Warning – some of these videos contain story spoilers, so watch them at your own risk!

GamesCom 2010: Daniel Erickson Interview

GameSpot took a few minutes to speak with Lead Writer on Star Wars: The Old Republic Daniel Erickson on space combat and some other topics. We learn some interesting nuggets of information:

  • Space combat may not be entirely optional
  • There will be access to rewards and other things through space combat
  • Advanced classes are “total class systems” not just little offshoots
  • Described advanced classes as very much “works in progress” (no word if that means the names as well)
  • Companions will factor in a big way into your class built
  • Companions may be assigned their abilities by “kits” you give them – for example, any companion can be a healer with the right kit
  • Daniel remarks that the Force is not magic, which makes the choice of the name Wizard for one of the Jedi Consular advanced classes all the more curious

This is a much-watch interview, and thanks to Bozzvegas for bringing it to our attention!

GamesCom 2010: Advanced Classes Revealed

[UPDATE] These appear to have been quoted as “working titles.” We’re trying to comfirm this witha 3rd party source, but the European fan site SWTOR Life in at GamesCom and was able to speak with James Ohlen.

Character customization in SWTOR is also made possible through a concept called advanced classes. It is a specialization of your primary class into one of two paths. Today at GamesCom 2010 the working titles of all 16 advanced classes were revealed.

Read their update here.

The benefit of having a convention going on in Germany, is that there’s already news when you wake up! This morning, we’re already getting word out of GamesCom that additional advanced class names were revealed during a press event:

  • Jedi Consular – Shadow and Wizard
  • Trooper – Commando and Vanguard
  • Bounty Hunter – Mercenary and Powertech
  • Imperial Agent -Operative and Sniper
  • Sith Inquisitor – Sorcerer and Assassin

Some of these Advanced Class names seem a little odd to us, as if they were the victim of poor translation. We might want to wait until the information is released formally to the public to assure accuracy. If these are in fact all correct, then we can all finally make a Jedi named Gandalf.

Thanks to our friends at Darth Hater for breaking this news first!

Breaking News: Space Combat Video Preview!

Hot off the presses at the Electronic Arts press conference at GamesCom 2010, we get an incredible look at space combat in The Old Republic!

Space Combat!

Space Combat!

In the video, we see some action that is very reminiscent of what we’re familiar with in the movies. The video seems to show a wide variety of ships that haven’t been revealed yet, so we suspect GamesCom might bring us the information about what type of ships the other classes will initially get. Our friends at Darth Hater have a working dissection of the video going, check that out as well.

Click here to view the video on the official Star Wars: The Old Republic site.

Stay tuned to Ask A Jedi for GamesCon coverage, not to mention all of the Star Wars Celebration info still to come!
