Facebook Image of The Week #15

‘Twas the Wednesday before E3… which means this is the final Facebook image we’ll get before we know whatever BioWare has up their sleeves for the show!

This week we get a screenshot of Dromund Kaas:

Dromund Kaas

Dromund Kaas is a beacon of efficiency and discipline. With a fully militarized society, police actions are rarely needed.

The Empire’s counter to Coruscant, it will be interesting to explore this planet fully realized.

Facebook Image of The Week #14

Here we are… Wednesday. Humpday, as some call it. And BioWare has once again come to the rescue to get us over that hump with a brand new screenshot:

Taris

A Ferrazid Hound prowls the undergrowth on Taris, trundling tirelessly after the scent of prey.

For players of Knights Of The Old Republic, the prospect of getting back on the ground on Taris is very intriguing!

Drew Karpyshyn Talks About Revan

Author and BioWare Senior Writer Drew Karpyshyn recently updated his blog, and he takes the opportunity to set the record about what to expect out of his upcoming novel set in The Old Republic – Revan.

Karpyshyn outlines the differences between a book character and a video game character, and tries to set expectations for fans:

To put it bluntly, Revan in the book will not be the uber-powered death machine you controlled at the end of the video game. You might have min-maxed your character to smack Darth Malak down in seconds without breaking a sweat, but in a book that battle would have been a brutal, hard fought affair spread over multiple pages.

He goes on further to assure fans that Revan is not an insignificant character, by any means:

That doesn’t mean I’m going to ignore Revan’s accomplishments as detailed in the game. The high level events and history are canon. Revan did defeat Mandalore and Darth Malak. He was an incredibly powerful Jedi. But a powerful Jedi in story terms (films, TV, books) is very different from a powerful Jedi in game terms.

Karpyshyn also made note that all of his previous Star Wars books are available now for pre-order as e-books, including the upcoming Revan. Revan is scheduled for release in the Fall.

UPDTAE: Revan publisher Del Ray has announced the release date of Revan to be November 15. Thanks to Klipto for the heads up.

The Doctors Speak To Gamasutra

Gamasutra has posted a nicely done, full length interview with BioWare co-founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk. You can call them The Doctors.

In the interview, they muse about the everything from Dragon Age to Mass Effect, the BioWare process and what sets them apart from other development studios, including the importance of  their employees.

But of course, what interview with the Doctors would be complete without some talk about Star Wars: The Old Republic? Here’s just a preview:

Gamasutra: There are a lot of experienced people that have worked on MMOs in the past working on The Old Republic, but it’s just hard to imagine how incredibly difficult it could be for a company that hasn’t released an MMO yet to support an MMO. I think players trust the design choices that BioWare is going to make, and innovations in that area, but the support for a game like that — a game as a service — how are you guys approaching that leading up to launch?

Greg Zeschuk: The preparations are as massive as the game. It’s interesting. It’s a good point. It’s something that’s been foremost in our minds for quite a while. Obviously, we have a certain level of confidence on the game side, because that’s very familiar territory for us. There are subtle nuances of how it’s different, server-based gameplay and that sort of thing.

But the whole service piece has probably been the thing we’ve learned most about. And I think the good thing there, though, is we have a lot of people who really do have a lot of experience. The folks at BioWare Mythic, a lot of them are part of the team, and they did it for 10 years, 15 years. They ran game services.

Head on over to Gamasutra for the whole read!
