Drew Karpyshyn Talks About Revan

Author and BioWare Senior Writer Drew Karpyshyn recently updated his blog, and he takes the opportunity to set the record about what to expect out of his upcoming novel set in The Old Republic – Revan.

Karpyshyn outlines the differences between a book character and a video game character, and tries to set expectations for fans:

To put it bluntly, Revan in the book will not be the uber-powered death machine you controlled at the end of the video game. You might have min-maxed your character to smack Darth Malak down in seconds without breaking a sweat, but in a book that battle would have been a brutal, hard fought affair spread over multiple pages.

He goes on further to assure fans that Revan is not an insignificant character, by any means:

That doesn’t mean I’m going to ignore Revan’s accomplishments as detailed in the game. The high level events and history are canon. Revan did defeat Mandalore and Darth Malak. He was an incredibly powerful Jedi. But a powerful Jedi in story terms (films, TV, books) is very different from a powerful Jedi in game terms.

Karpyshyn also made note that all of his previous Star Wars books are available now for pre-order as e-books, including the upcoming Revan. Revan is scheduled for release in the Fall.

UPDTAE: Revan publisher Del Ray has announced the release date of Revan to be November 15. Thanks to Klipto for the heads up.

Hop on over to Drew’s blog for the full read!

  1. My wife noticed that the book, which was originally set by the publisher to be released in October, now has a release date of November 15th. This is the publisher, not amazon or some other retailer giving out this date.

I’m assuming this book is supposed to be out AFTER the release of the game… I wish we could get some confirmation on that, yet I haven’t seen it.

If that is the case however, going from an October to November release date looks like an internal release date for the game might have got pushed about a month???

Hey Klitpo thanks for the tip! It’s interesting speculation if the book release is being moved to align with a post-game release…

      • I can only assume that they intend for it to come out after the game, if there is to be more details in the Revan book about who the Emperor is.

But yeah, just pure speculation. It could also be Del Ray pushing it back, but it seems like with a book like this, it would be a joint decision with the publisher, bioware/ea, and lucasarts.

After all, their excuse for delaying Deceived by 3 months was so it came out closer to the game. So that definitely had something to do with that book, guess we will wait and see.

  2. Emeka Uwazurike says:

Doesn’t Bioware usually drop their books pre-game release?

    • Ajay (R2D2) says:

I looked through the Mass Effect book releases, one was 6 months prior and another 6 months after their respectively game releases. It is hard to tell. My guess is that they want to release the novel within a month time frame of the release. To me, I think releasing the book after would make sense due to some of the spoilers contained within it.

  3. Wow, that Darth Bane costume looks amazing! I wonder if that was a fan or an official costume?

Can’t wait for the book! Just finished the Darth Bane series and I’m feeling withdrawal.
