Blue Milk & Cereal: What Do You Think About Heroic Areas And Quests?

No day would be complete without the breakfast of Jedi: Blue Milk & Cereal.  Every morning, the team at Ask A Jedi will get Force-induced thoughts coursing through your head with delicious issues from around the galaxy! Join in the discussion below to make your voice heard!

I think one of the things that surprised me the most – pleasantly, I might add – was the early presence of quests and open world areas that require you to be in a group to survive. With all the talk of being able to “solo” the game, this was a refreshing sight. You can absolutely still solo your entire class story, of course, but this goes a long way in adding that second “M” in MMO.

Any time you see a [HEROIC] designation in your quest tracker, it means that the objective is set somewhere inside a dangerous area of the game designed for multiple players. Putting these group encounters in the game so early will really help players get used to the idea of group play early, better preparing them for later Flashpoints and Operations. In turn, this should help foster the building of robust friends lists and strong guilds – critical for an MMO.

Now, as mentioned already, these quests are completely optional so can skip them and move on if you like. But I have to wonder how much missing XP will matter. Will it end up putting you significantly under level after a time, making even your solo class quest content difficult? Not likely but something to think about.

So, dear AAJ readers, I just wanted to see what everyone here thought about this. Are you happy to see these dangerous areas, especially so early in the game? Do you skip doing them? Or do you detest the idea altogether? Discuss!

Do you like the group areas and quests [HEROIC] early and throughout the game?

  1. I love the heroics in tor. They make the game above super. I wouldn’t mibd more of them.

  2. With the way early play was set up. my friends were like 13 levels higher before i got my invite so just been skipping.

  3. Right now, I love them. As I mainly play healers they give me extra practice healing outside of the intensity of a flashpoint.

2 years down the line, when most people have played all the alts they want to and are focusing on the endgame, I don’t think I’ll like them, because it’ll be very difficult to get groups for.

  4. I would have loved to see a more warhammer-esque public quest system rather than this group quest system honestly. The group quest system would be fine if it wasn’t such a hassle to get a group together.

  5. Silvertaurus says:

At very launch it was superb.. but now week after, when everyone moved on to higher levels, my character which i fool around behind with, almost have no access there.

With my Main at lv40, im on Hoth atm. With 4-6 players on planet at same time (queue to serves, so its not empty), i have almost no access to [Heroic 4] quests… also whole my guild is waaaay behind, so noone to help =(

  6. WerewolfGuardian says:

I like them to an extent, but I wish there were more that were Heroic 2 or Heroic 2+. I’m duoing with my wife and when we see Heroic 4 pop up, we just shrug and drop the quest. Flashpoints I can see being 4-man affairs (though we loved being able to do the Esseles and the Black Talon with just the two of us and our companions), but it would be nice if all the open world heroic stuff were more small-group friendly.

  7. I think it’s a great way to help push people into a group situation, so they can understand the dynamic between their character and others. This is important since it leads nicely into 4man Flashpoint content. Which itself is a nice gateway into 8 or 16man Operations. Seems built to encourage the development of server relationships and guilds — which is a good thing.

  8. I like them. I have only done a few though. Also if you do skip them it does not hurt your xp leveling process I am still high level for the planet I am on.

  9. I think they’re neat and pretty fun. The best part is they are completely optional. They’re not required to see the end of the planet’s storyline (at least none thus far have), but act as good supplemental story. As a huge fan of story, I love that about them.

  10. Heroic missions are f’in awesome addition to the game.

Unfortunately Heroic mission content quality varies very much, there are currently some “basic” quests that beat heroic quests 100-0, hope they pay more attention designing these in the future.

  11. I think they’re great fun to do with friends, and even with strangers most of my experiences have been good aside from some idiots who don’t know the first thing about crowd control and/or how AoE DPS is the mortal enemy of crowd control.

But when it works, it works great, they’re good fun, can be anything from five minute excursions to half hour adventures.

The real problem is finding a group, you basically need to wait for that sweet spot where a lot of people are in the same part of progressing through a planet as you are. As I’ve had a few times where I saw plenty of people asking for help in Heroic quests, but often for quests I’ve either already done or that I’ve yet to acquire. On my Imperial character this is no problem since my guild is very supportive, even if it sometimes means getting help from a character that’s six levels too strong for the quest but it’s better than trying to find a properly balanced group for half an hour.

But on my Republic character I don’t have that kind of network of friends and guildies yet so I need to rely on pugging a lot more, so that often boils down to waiting while just finishing up solo quests around the planet you’re currently on.
