Blue Milk & Cereal: Will You Save Multiple Character Names?

No day would be complete without the breakfast of Jedi: Blue Milk & Cereal.  Every morning, the team at Ask A Jedi will get Force-induced thoughts coursing through your head with delicious issues from around the galaxy! Join in the discussion below to make your voice heard!

We all have names we hold special to ourselves. You know, the name your gaming friends know you as or a set of names you’ve used for characters over the years.

For me, the name Shockum has been a name I’ve had for over 5 years now. Sure, back in my early gaming days, I had an extended name here or another namem there. But, Shockum has stuck with me the longest. If I went with something else, I’d get to hear this line a lot, “Who’s this guy?” You can ask my guildmates in Reign, about it; I tried it once, and wish I never had. It’s a headache to repeatedly say who you are to friends who already know you!

So, that brings me to the question, are you planning to save names or namebank?

Simply, “namebanking” refers to the practice of quickly creating multiple characters to reserve your preferred name for a character you will create later, precenting someone else from taking it in the mean time. How heartbreaking is it to create a character with a name you love, only to see it’s taken or unavailable? Trust me, I’ve been there and it’s a pain to add another letter change the spelling to use it.

I, for one, only have the one name to reserve and make sure it’s mine. There might be a couple for alts that I want to use but they’re of little or no importance to me. All I care about is one name, and I’ll do what it takes to get it.

How about you? Do you have a name(s) that you are planning to lock down with multiple level one characters? Maybe you have someone planning to hold it for you, just in case something happens? Let us know (but I’d advise posting those names here in the comments section ;)

Edit: And now that we know the release date, there is plenty of time to conjur up those names!

Will you create characters ahead of time just to save names?

  1. Ajay (R2D2) says:

My names tend to be rather unique. I don’t find a need to reserve the names early on. If I did so, it would take a good bit of time creating the characters before I really played SWTOR!

  2. I’m one of those that will try to save a couple names… The names I always use, are taken so fast. :(

  3. Unlikely, I have a hard time enough thinking up just one name, never mind 3 or 4 :D

  4. A lot of my names are unique but I like reserving them anyways just in case. But I’ll definitely go through the random name generator to see if there’s any I like that I want to save.

  5. I like to save a few even though most of them would never be used. The shorter the name the more likely it is to be taken though.

  6. Considering I tend to create names that hold some form of meaning relevant to the character I’m naming, I’ve never really had to worry about names being taken, so no, since I’m not planning on being Darth Furious I see no reason to try and “reserve” a name.

Not to mention you ~always~ run the risk of losing your name in the time between the time of deleting your placeholder character and finishing up your actual character.

    • Yeah, that’s definitely a risk. I created a little trick for myself. Create the placeholder, then go back into character customization to figure out how I want my guy to look. Once I have it decided, I’ll back out and delete the character. Then start over.

Saves me a lot of time, and makes the window extremely small for someone who tries to get that name.

  7. It’s probably 5-6 Names for me. I will most likely not play that many characters (at least early on) but there are several names, that i hold dear and i just want to be safe…

  8. Now that you told everyone your favourite name… someone is bound to steal it from you… I hope that it doesnt happen, but…
