Blue Milk & Cereal: How Will You Choose Your Companion?

No day would be complete without the breakfast of Jedi: Blue Milk & Cereal.  Every morning, the team at Ask A Jedi will get Force-induced thoughts coursing through your head with delicious issues from around the galaxy! Join in the discussion below to make your voice heard!

If you look back into the history of BioWare, the idea of companions, or your “team,” has been a strong subplot for games like Mass Effect, Dragon Age and of course Knights of The Old Republic.

So it was a safe bet that when Star Wars: The Old Republic was announced, this idea would be integrated into the story here as well. One key difference here in TOR, however, is that we’ll be given the option of picking just one companion to take with us while we explore, and quest, on each planet we land on.

Currently, the official Companions page lists just one companion for each class. But it’s been stated and shown that each class will have a wide variety companions to choose from. However, only one of which we’ll be able to take with us at any given time (and the rest abolished to the crafting station!)

That raises the question: How will you choose your adventuring companion?

If you’re like me, you’ll go with the one for the sheer entertainment value. If you’ve read my articles, you know I’m going Sith Inquisitor. And if you’ve been following TOR at all, you know Inquisitor’s get Khem Val as a companion. He seems dark, loyal, and downright fearsome. I love it.

But what about you? Are you planning to use the companion that compliments you? Maybe like to tank or heal for you? Or, like me, look at the fun and entertainment factor various companions will bring?

How will you choose your primary companion?

  1. As I plan on playing a melee class, I think a healer overall would be more beneficial. Or a tank. But I think a healer first.

If I was playing a ranged as my main, I would probably go with melee tank. Send him in first and then draw the aggression of the pack one by one.

  2. Plan on taking the complaining most necessary along with me depending on the situation and who I am group with. I like to give them all some spotlight time =P

  3. Old Bill Kenobi says:

Wife and I will quest together me tanking her healing both of us with dps companions.

  4. I dont really want one, it’s cool but I prefere to be more powerful alone than counting on a “pet”.

But off course, I will choose the compagnion that suit the best with the situation.

Healer during leveling, healer as a tank during PvE raiding, damage dealer as a DPS in the same occasions… Or whatever is the more helpful for the group/raid if something is missing.

  5. I’m going to roll a tank, so i will opt to bring a healer

  6. ScytheNoire says:

It depends on the class you are playing. If you are a tank, you’d want a healer or dps with you. If you are a dps, you’d want a tank or healer. If you are a healer, you’d want a tank or dps. You’d want something that makes up for what you are lacking.

  7. Based on the size of her.. guns.

  8. Every good Bounty Hunter needs a saw bones who doesn’t ask questions when you come to them with a few extra holes in you.

  9. I plan on using all my companions just to get to know them better.

  10. I will be out as a tank and my wife as a healer, so our companions will both be damage dealers. Full group with just two people!

  11. I’ll just take someone of whom I like the personality the most, heh. I tend to do that with my single player Bioware RPGs too, pich characters that I like and just make them work in my team.

    • Played them exactly the same way. Now, if it’s a situation where I need something specific, I will not hesitate to bring the appropriate companion. Whether it’s a healer, tank, or dps companion.

  12. Don’t know if Troopers get a healing companion but I will get one of those since I will be a Commando.

  13. Personally I think it’ll depend on what kind of companion is available when.

1st priority will be the love interest.

If not available then I’ll probably take a healer since I plan on playing a Jedi Shadow in the Kinetic Combat (tank tree). Should make me a little more difficult to kill while I’m out and about on my own.

Otherwise it’ll come down to whoever I think is the most fun to have around.

Only problem I have with the love interest companion is that I read somewhere pursuing that plot will earn my Jedi a few dark side points. :(

  14. I pick the ones that grab my attention the most. Personality is a big plus.

  15. TheDarkKnight says:

For story purpose it would be my love intrest but for gameplay it would be the opposite of my class AC. So it was DPS I would have a Tank Companion. If I was a Tank I would have a DPS.. for leveling.

  16. Since I’ll be playing a healer I will most likely want a tank or DPS companion of some sort. :)

  17. pwnttothemax says:

i’m probably going to use the most interesting companions most often. that being said, when the need arises for some real strategy i’ll switch out. the ones that make the strongest connections to me are generally the first few that i meet in bioware’s other titles.

  18. I plan on playing a Vanguard tank, so I want a healer. Rumor has it that the third Trooper companion (Elara Dorne) can heal, and she’s also the one who seems most interesting personality-wise and romance-wise for my male Trooper…so sign me up!
