Blue Milk & Cereal: What Month Will TOR Release?

No day would be complete without the breakfast of Jedi: Blue Milk & Cereal.  Every morning, the team at Ask A Jedi will get Force-induced thoughts coursing through your head with delicious issues from around the galaxy! Join in the discussion below to make your voice heard!

Heading into PAX this week, we thought it would be a great time to take the pulse of the communuty and do a release date check! The Penny Arcade Expo is the last major gaming convention in the US remaining in the release window for Star Wars: The Old Republic, which as of right now is still “Holiday 2011”. There are still other events on the schedule, but arguably none of them have the hutzbah of PAX!

Obviously, as of this writing we don’t know what announcements will come out of PAX, but assuming one of them isn’t a release date, that will leave 4 full months left in 2011 in which BioWare can meet its stated launch goal. September is unlikely, as that’s been stated when Beta Weekends will be taking place. Realistically, that leaves 3 months.

So today’s question is simple… what month do you think TOR will finally launch? I’m not sure there’s an 0ffical Vegas line on the odds, but we knew the TOR community will have lots to say on the topic! Let’s hear it!

In what month do you think TOR will finally launch?

Release Date?

  1. I like voting first. You never realize it, but you see your vote with “100%” next to it. It’s only after a moment of thinking, “Wow, crowd-think!” that you see November (1) 100% and realize that it is simply an aberration from being first in line.

  2. November 22, 2011

  3. December 2011, sometime around the ‘holidays’ -.- Stupid bioware/ea/lucasarts… They’re all a bunch of liars…

  4. You know …. the more i vote on release specifics the more it reminds me that its far enough long that we are voting on specifics and not generalities.
That makes my cereal a good sugary brand, and not a stale shredded wheat.

  5. So many people have been speculating on when the game will be released, and as usual trolls abound in these thread on the SWTOR site with ridiculous release date. However if you just think about it and gather some simple info you can figure it out. You won’t get an exact date but you can narrow it down to a 3 week window.

Past games have an average time of 4-6 weeks release from when the announcement of the game releasing.

EA did announce that in September they would tell us when the release date is.

Razer announced that it will release it’s SWTOR Peripherals when the game releases and on their site they did state early November is when the peripherals would be coming out. In the video below at about 4:15 .

EA did state that it is going to aim for Holiday 2011.

New game releases have been on Tuesdays.

So with that info, we can look at November 1st, 8th or 15th.

As this is at the 4-6 week threshold if EA announced the release date at the end of September.
This is around when Americans celebrate Thanksgiving.
They are all on a Tuesday.
They all fall within Early November.

So my prediction is for November 8th based on this info.

  6. I’m hoping for November, but wouldn’t be surprised to see it get delayed.

  7. ScytheNoire says:

    Late November (22nd or 29th)
No delays, it’s on track for release.

  8. I am expecting a November launch. Tuesdays are standard – and SR has said that they will be doing a “standard” release – so 1st, 8th, 15th or 22nd. I discount anything later as November 25th is Black Friday (the biggest shopping day of the year in the USA) and November 28th is Cyber Monday (the biggest Online shopping day of the year in the USA). EA would be foolish to not have the game on the shelved well in advance of those dates.

Because of that, I also am doubtful of November 22nd. Some people want to see reviews, hear about others playing, etc before putting TOR on their shopping list. The 22nd is just too close to the 25th for that to happen. I also discount the 1st as I think BioWare still needs more time to work on things.

Thus, I am most comfortable with November 8th or November 15th, with the 15th being the most likely date. At least, this is my opinion.

  9. They have been delaying the game since forever, but they made a strong commitment for 2011, so i voted december. Big beta testing in september, so they will debug a lot in sept/oct. If it goes well, then it might come out in november, but i wouldn’t be surprised if they finetune it until december.

But no one knows for sure, gotta love speculation :)

  10. Hmmmm…..what if the whole September Beta-weekends is just a cover up? The game has been in Beta-testing for a few months now. Anyone ever considered that?

Even with that, I think October. A lot of the information I’m basing my speculation off of was mentioned in Thybountyhunter’s post but I just think he has it set a little too late. I believe SWTOR is going to try and launch before Skyrim and MW3 and all the huge console games that will be launching in mid-November. At the very latest, the first week of November.

  11. I vote November also.

  12. I think we don’t have a date because Bioware doesn’t have a date. I’m sure they have a window that is smaller than what they’ve said, but I believe the September testing will have a major impact on release. If Sept testing goes without a hitch, i think late October. Otherwise, early November.

    • @Raz, I think you are spot on. Their estimation is constantly changing based on feed back and more information gathered from the efforts.

    • I think you are right on, but the one thing to remember is that each of the testing weekends could be a pre-cursor to setting up for launch. I’m sure that the will try and simulate a launch situation with a smaller number but proportional to what they think they will have at launch. So probably 1/5 to 1/4 of the size, in terms of numbers. They will see, after the first week or two, what they need to work on…if anything…and then announce a release date, based on their data and level of preparedness.

    • In some sense, they get two cracks at having a smooth ACTUAL launch day. We, as early release accounts, need to be ready to have a not so smooth launch, because they want to have the launch for the actual launch day be smooth. If the early release people complain about a not so smooth launch, EA/Bioware will just tell us that we should be grateful for having a large headstart on the rest of the masses. And I for one would agree with them. We are the ones who should be able to manage with the little glitches here and there, as well as nightly downtime, so that the bugs can get fixed for the main launch day.

  13. I’ve had an inside source tell me October…

  14. I have a feeling it will be in late October.

  15. nov 22 because it’s my b-day!

  16. royaldufus says:

idk about november because of the events they are supposed to go to on there website it says they are going to dream hack in late november with swtor

    • Abner Ford says:

Why wouldn’t the game be out before Dreamhack? They’ve stated they will be going to events after launch. Plus, how awesome would it be if they have a big LAN event on live servers at Dreamhack?

  17. Abner Ford says:

Throwing my two cents in, I think it will be early November. There are too many logical signs pointing to that, including many that have already been stated here. I will say that I don’t believe it will be announced at PAX, though.

  18. Musikfrasse says:

Im guessing November for the US but since they have one event at Dreamhack(Sweden) in the last days of November i figure that the Europe release Will be in December, possibly a Christmas release? Or in the worst case January :/

Well, just a theory since all we can do at the moment is speculate.
