Blue Milk & Cereal: How Hard Should Titles Be To Earn?

No day would be complete without the breakfast of Jedi: Blue Milk & Cereal.  Every morning, Joanis and the team at Ask A Jedi will get Force-induced thoughts coursing through your head with delicious issues from around the galaxy! Join in the discussion below to make your voice heard!

BioWare announced some time ago that players would able to earn titles for their exploits in TOR. Some of the titles include Master, Lord and Darth. While some of the titles will be rewards for quests, others will be rewarded for raiding and player-versus-player combat. Some of them are going to be easier to get than others.

My opinion is that if titles such as Grand Master or Dark Lord are attainable, only a few people per server should be able to get them. It should be a long and difficult quest that takes hours and hours to complete. Such titles shouldn’t be rewarded for things that most people are expected to complete, such as class quests and raid content. If everyone has a title, it has much less meaning.

Others should be easier to attain. It shouldn’t take 40 hours to get every title. Only those select few that mean the most should take a lot of effort. I’m totally okay with every trooper running around with the Sergeant title.  Grand Generals should be much more uncommon, though.

How hard should titles be to earn? Do you think everyone should have the opportunity to get every title?

Arise, Darth Snoop! (Hey, he knew the handshake...)

  1. Keep some of them difficult to achieve, without a doubt. I hate to say make it a grind, but how else would they do it…

  2. Brax Kedren says:

Hard, but keep them out of raids as not every player participates in raids.

    • Lethality says:

Great point, I agree. There should probably be same raid-only titles… but all raiders should get them.

The truly rare ones should be ridiculously difficult, but attainable by an individual.

    • Pashtun says:

I completely disagree. Raiding should provide unique titles to those who enjoy raiding. Each playstyle should have the opportunity to collect unique titles, but certainly don’t exclude people who just enjoy raiding any more than another playstyle.

      • Lethality says:

Yes, I think there should be raiding-only titles… but any of the truly rare and meaningful titles should be able to be attained by anyone regardless of if they raid or not.

Now, I don’t know what that means in terms of design, and does that automatically mean “solo”? I dunno.

        “In my opinion!”

        • Pashtun says:

I respect your point of view. I would like to see rare titles be given to all forms of play. I would like there to be enough depth and complexity to crafting, that the most dedicated crafters have a chance to get a rare and unique title, same with raiding, solo, story, ..etc.

  3. I think all titles, such as Grand “insert title here” should be singular only one per server. and smaller titles could be spread out.And i think all titles should be difficult to recieve

  4. I would like to see a mix. Perhaps some titles only for PvP, class specific, etc.

I have to say, there are a lot of pretty silly titles in Rift that are just plain fun. I’ve decided I like a game with a ton of titles available for various achievements, some very easy to get and some much harder to get. The silly ones like “The Batty” or “Dances with Squirrels” are just for doing some random world puzzles or exploration. Maybe silly won’t really fit the SWTOR mode, but I think giving people lots of easy titles that do fit the genre and themes won’t harm anything. Even letting someone say they are “of X Planet” gives them a little vanity boost and chance to customize themselves a bit.

  6. I definately agree that the most prized titles such as Darth or grand master should be mightily hard to obtain but i also agree that they should be obtainable for any individual wether you raid pvp or pve.but ofc there should be raid, pvp, pve and crafting specific titles…i for one am not a great fan of raiding, althought in my time on other mmo’s i have probably played hundreds of hours its defo not what i want to do in TOR.Therefore i would be disapointed if lets say Darth was only available with crazy amounts of raiding.

  7. i like the idea …

but it becomes a bit of a nuisance in the long run, and would lead to dissonance when reading nameplates and the inevitable amusing toon names i.e.

    Silver-Hand Jobbs
    Agent Nippels
    Eight Parsec Furbleyde
