Massively: TOR Crafting Preview
Our buddy Larry Everett, author of Hyperspace Beacon over at Massively, is every bit as big of a Star Wars and MMO geek as anyone. I always enjoy reading his thoughts, and this week especially since he recounts his recent beta experience with crafting in Star Wars: The Old Republic, a subject near and dear to my heart and one which the community is desperate to learn more about!
Larry gives a pretty thorough overview of all of the Crew Skills, and puts together a nice list of harvesting and crafting pairings:
I promised a breakdown of materials and Crew Skills, so here it is to the best of my knowledge. I could not run all the Crew Skills myself, but I did speak to other beta testers who had.
- Armormech uses materials from Scavenging, Investigation, and Underworld Trading.
- Armstech uses materials from Scavenging and Treasure Hunting.
- Artifice uses materials from Archaeology, Treasure Hunting, and Underworld Trading.
- Biochem uses materials from Bioanalysis and Underworld Trading
- Cybertech uses materials from Scavenging, Slicing, Treasure Hunting, and Underworld Trading.
- Synthweaving uses materials from Archaeology, Diplomacy, Investigation, and Underworld Trading.

“Of course, I didn’t have to gather all the materials myself. Unlike most MMOs, in which you have to take time out of your busy killing-spree to stop and mine some ore, in SWTOR you can send your companion over to the node to gather materials while you engage the enemy. However, I noticed with Slicing that if I was not out of combat before the short time it took for my companion to unlock the safe, I would have to later walk over to gather the contents myself.”
I’d wondered about that and this is great news to me. I’d hoped that it would be possible for the companion to gather items while you beat up anything near the node. Not sure if the part about having to be out of combat for the companion to successfully gather it is intended or not. Makes sense in one way (can’t gather in combat) but would be unfortunate in another (the ninja’ing).
Nice article, except it did not clear up my one major area of confusion. Is Synthweaving just light armor? Or all Force armor (light, med, heavy)? Even the writer seemed uncertain on this point. An official update would be fantastic!
The article did state:
“Lastly, Synthweaving creates Jedi light armor, which is essentially just Jedi Consular armor. All other armor pieces are created, of course, by the Armormech.”
I’m not sure why he said it’s just Jedi Consular armor, since it’d presumably make armor for all the Force using classes. Otherwise it’d be a tad on the hyper-specialized side.
But yeah, a little more clarification would be nice.
I’ll try to track down the source, but I know I read somewhere that Synthweaving is all Force armor – light, medium, and heavy. (Might be SWTOR Crafting?)
I read that too, but then at the very end he seems to second-guess the whole thing. I mean, c’mon, he gets to play the freakin’ beta and he can’t figure this stuff out for us poor shmucks out here? There’s so much I want to know about the Crew skills system, and so little of it was really answered…
