A Detailed Look At The Pre-Order Digital Items

What a night! After waiting for almost three years, we’re now able to pre-order Star Wars: The Old Republic. But there’s no time for rest just yet! We now have a whole NEW set of stuff to talk about!

Aside from the awesome physical items included with the Star Wars: The Old Republic Collector’s Edition, such as the Journal of Master Gnost-Dural (as annotated by Satele Shan!), there are also a nice selection of digital in-game items included. Most of these are also included with the Digital Deluxe addition as well. We thought we’d take a closer look at them…

Color StoneChange the color of your Lightsaber blade and blaster bolts

This virtual item actually comes with all editions of TOR. It seems pretty straight-forward, and pretty cool. It’s interesting to note that it works with different type of weapons, so that says something about the modification systems of said weapons. We have no idea how it works – if it’s a random color, or if you get to choose from a color picker each time you apply it.

Flare GunFire a dramatic and inspiring flare high into the air

By the description, this doesn’t appear to have an actual use beyond novelty or vanity… unless it summons a battalion of Troopers to come to your aid. Wonder if the Color Stone works with it?

Training DroidA small but advanced training droid to hover at your side for combat assistance

I’m picturing the small orb that Luke used in A New Hope while training to be a Jedi. It does say “combat assistance” but I just can’t see this being much assistance. Seems like mostly a vanity item, similar to the Mechanical Greench in World of Warcraft

HoloDancerPortable entertainment system to project your own holographic dancer

Obviously a vanity item that should provide some RP fun. Although oddly similar to the Brazier of Dancing Flames in WoW.

HoloCamKeep visual records of your in-game adventures as you travel the Star Wars galaxy

All I can say is – BRILLIANT! We’ve had replay systems in sports games forever, why not MMOs? If this does function similar to replay, you can now review your most epic MMO moments any time you like. BRILLIANT!

STAPThe STAP us a sleek and unique in-game vehicle you will acquire during your journey

It has already been confirmed that you will acquire your first player vehicle at about level 25 in TOR. So I imagine if you’ve purchased either the Digital Deluxe or Collector’s Edition (both include this item), this will be an additional option for you to select from a vendor when you are able to acquire a vehicle.

Mouse DroidA little mouse Droid to join your adventures

This is one of the exclusives to the Collector’s Edition. It seems like a neat vanity “pet” that will follow you around. I’m sure there are some cool little animations it will do. Kind of looks like a Roomba vacuum!

Collector’s StoreUnique in-game vendor with a dynamic assortment of items available only to purchasers of the Collector’s Edition

This is easily the most intriguing item of them all. Also exclusive to the Collector’s Edition, the possibilities here are endless. If this is something BioWare will routinely stock with new items over time, it adds immeasurable value to purchasing the CE.

So if there’s one takeaway from this, it seems there’s going to be no shortage of fun, vanity items throughout TOR to occupy our time when we’re not righting the wrongs (or wronging the rights) of the galaxy.

Would be curious to hear everyone’s take on these items!

  1. Findarato says:

I really want to know more about the mount and the store. If the mount is faster or as fast at the tier 1 mount that would save us some cash, and if the store sells more than fluf items, or if more than one person can shop at it then it might be worth it. need more information about it.

  2. I really hope the store provides some tangible items in the long run! :)

(Also you’re missing the “N” at the end of Edition in the first sentence of Mouse Droid)

  3. Great writeup, will you edit it to include the physical items too? :)

  4. The idea of a replay camera is AMAZING.

It means I won’t have to have fraps running all the time and can go back and record something after the fact! Love it.

In addition is will be invaluable to watch just how a boss battle went wrong (and call out whoever was standing in the fire)

  5. Very nice. CAn’t wait.

  6. Raithnor says:

If the picture is any indication the color stone might be yellow.

The Flare Gun sounds like an emote.

The Training droid and Mouse droid sound like vanity pets although it sound like the Training droid can ping people for a point of damage.

I’m betting the STAP will have the same stats as the base vehicle it’s just uses a different character model. It might be slightly better, but it’s not going to be better than the next vehicle you upgrade to.

The store I’m betting has slightly better items that the first store on the origin worlds, but I think it will go obsolete very quickly.

My experience with these sorts of pre-order bonuses have been “They’re either completely cosmetic.” or “They provide a small boost in the beginning and you grow out of them.”

  7. It’s probably a safe bet to say that some of these things, like the collector’s store and the holocam, will be available to everyone somehow and not just the deluxe people.

    • HoloCam maybe, as the game progresses they may find it worthwhile for full release. The whole purpose of the collector’s store is as a bonus for those buying the CE, however, so I wouldn’t expect that to ever get a general release.

      • Lockehart says:

I’ve heard rumors that even if you don’t buy the CE now, you can later upgrade to CE store access as a microtransaction post-release.

We’ll see though. I’d personally be interesting in this since I’d love store access, but don’t really want to pay $70 more for it since I don’t really care about the statuette or any of the physical treats.

All the CE store offers really is cosmetic perks and they have stated they plan to update it fairly often, so there’s really no reason to only ever try to make money off of it this one time.

  8. I agree if the collectors edition store has special or unique items that u can only get by purchasing collectors edition that will be very intriguing indeed. especially if they keep updating it with more then just cosmetic or fluff items. It will pay off big time and go along way especially since i brought the colectors edition. I see its selling out rather quickly which was to be expected.

  9. The HoloCam may be the most interesting thing in here. If done right, could be very cool. I just hope it doesn’t end up like in game chat in many games, where it’s not done quite right and people still end up using other software for the same purpose. I have faith in Bioware.

The Collector’s store could be interesting as well. I think of the Black Emporium in DA2, which had some nice stuff in it. But this is an MMO, so they can’t just give people who ordered a CE all kinds of amazing goodies that are overpowered or anything. Could be some real potential for awesome. And, as an ongoing thing, they can use it to give anniversary rewards, like special pets, to those who ordered the CE.

    • Lethality says:

You know the more I think about the HoloCam… it would seem to be a core game feature. Something they’d want all players to have.

So, it either doesn’t work like we’re thinking (replay) or… they will make it available later for anyone via Micro-transaction for real money.

      Just a thought.

      • DJ Shadow says:

I’m using my HoloCam for PvP footage!!

      • It’s possible the HoloCam will be exclusive for a limited time. This gives the CE and digital deluxe people something nice, AND allows Bioware to test the feature in game. Then, after a certain point, they can make it available to everyone.

Then those with the spiffy editions will still have had it exclusive for awhile, and any bugs or issues could have been ironed out before wide release.

OR, we’re all wrong and it works in some other strange way we haven’t conceived yet.

  10. @Raz yeah I dust even think about that but that would be awesome the collector store offered up special pets and other mounts that were exclusive to the store and if they keep updating it with goodies there are going to be a lot of sore people out there who wished theygot the collectors edition.

  11. Brilliant! Just brilliant. I love the write up and agree that the replay camera is outstanding! Wow.

I’m such a geek! I have ordered the digital premium to ensure immediate download and activation and also the collector’s edition to get all the goodies. It’s insanely expensive but I’m blessed to be able to afford it.

If things go well I’ll get the CE on time and be able to start with launch. Who knows, the second pre-order might gain me an extra ticket to the pre-order testing lottery (doubtful)? And if I do get the CE edition without delay I’ll have a digital premium (Origins) digital code…Hmmm…I wonder what I’ll do with that? I will be contemplating something around this for the RP fans of AAJ perhaps?

At any rate, wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. And just how much of a SWTOR fanboi/geek am I? Well, I’ll leave it for you to reply. My only regret – my latest All The Galaxy’s A Stage article is completely overshadowed by this MASSIVE NEWS!

    • Hehehe. I’m just about done with an article for The Nerfherder’s Guide to the Galaxy, but I’m not about to try to submit it in this madness. Next week. I’m sure the RPers will find and enjoy your article though. If not, just flood the official forums with links to it! :P

  12. To Sa Chi:

If you just buy the Collector’s Edition (even if not through Origin), it links your SWTOR account to your Origin account and places SWTOR in your Games list. I’m pretty sure you’ll be able to digitally download it for early access without the need of purchasing an actual digital copy.

I suppose there’s a chance I could be wrong (i.e. if they require the game code from the box before download), so I understand if you want to be 100% certain, but that’s unlikely.

    • Lethality says:

This is true – even if you pre-order physically, you can download the game to get early access. It’s in the FAQ here: http://www.swtor.com/preorder/faq

If I wish to purchase and download a digital copy of the Game, but also wanted to receive the physical items in a boxed edition, will I have to buy two versions of the Game?

Yes. Physical and digital editions of Star Wars: The Old Republic are exclusive of each other. When you purchase the Digital Standard or Digital Deluxe Edition of the Game, no physical items (i.e., no physical box, packaging, discs, software, documentation or other tangible materials) will be sent to you. Please note, the only difference between physical and digital copies of the Standard Edition of Star Wars: The Old Republic are the physical items included in the box. If you purchase a physical edition of Star Wars: The Old Republic, you will be able to download the Game client separately if you wish.

    • Agreed and thanks. In my haste I will confess I didn’t read the FAQ. I rushed to Origins and purchased. Now for a confession.

The CE was marked sold out. So I purchased. And then I went to gamestop and found it there. I’d already entered the code so purchased the CE from there and now have 2 versions. I was trying to rationalize earlier.

So now I’ll have a second code and box. I may wait to see what happens. The CE code hasn’t come yet. But if it does come I’ll see what I can do with that. Thanks again though :)
