Arnie Jorgensen Interview – Star Wars Celebration

Next up in our series of interviews from Star Wars Celebration V, we have Lead Concept Artist Arnie Jorgensen.

Arnie provides a glimpse into his role on Star Wars: The Old Republic, a little bit on his background, and confirmation that yes, even at this stage, they are still creating new stuff! We don’t have any video for this one unfortunately, so this transcript will have to do.

Tomorrow we hope to bring you our fourth and final interview in this series, which will be a video interview with Clint Young, Senior Concept Artist (Environments). Also, don’t miss our Celebration interviews with Hall Hood and Drew Karpyshyn which were posted in the last few days. Enjoy!

Ask A Jedi: Hi Arnie, thanks for joining us! Could you tell us a little about your background, projects you worked on before joining BioWare, and your role currently?

Arnie Jorgensen: Going back a ways, I went to art school, Joe Kubert’s school of Graphic Art and Animation. Got out of there and did one summer with Rolling Stone magazine and from there I went to DC Comics, Marvel Comics and just about every major comics house except for Dark Horse, which is still a black strike on my record.

From Comics I went to ION Storm in Dallas for one year, then I went to Retro Studios for one year, then I went to Sony for  four and a half, five years where I was the Lead Concept Artist for Star Wars Galaxies and now I’ve been at BioWare for about four and a half years as Lead Concept Artist on Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Star Wars Celebration: Day Three

A long day three here at Star Wars Celebration has come to a close… but what did it have in store for TOR fans you ask? Well, plenty!

For starters, today there was an encore of The Art and Writing of Star Wars: The Old Republic panel. The format was much the same as yesterday with the same cast of characters. One switch for today however was Arnie Jorgensen manning the design station, while Clint Young took to the chairs with the rest of the panel.

Arnie proceeded to do an entirely different piece of concept art than in yesterday’s panel. Yesterday, Clint produced an interesting environment, but today we were treated to a character that “we will meet in our travels through the game.”

Today we also got to sit down for in-depth discussions with all 4 BioWare developer team members, and are looking forward to publishing those interviews – written, audio and video – in the coming days!

One of the highlights today for me personally was attending the Last Tour to Endor special event at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. None other than George Lucas himself attended the performance of “Indiana Jones and the Jedi Temple of Doom,” sitting just rows away. Also on hand was Anthony Daniels who participated as an extra in the show. In addition, Seth Green was also in attendance and likewise participated as an extra. The love for Star Wars knows no bounds, and it was very cool to be in that theater tonight with those people.

Stay tuned for more info tomorrow from the 4th and final day of Star Wars Celebration!

Star Wars Celebration: Day Two

Today was day 2 of Star Wars Celebration V here in Orlando, and what a day it was. More of the same: heat, humidity and a long walk from the parking lot. But also something a little different than yesterday: Lots of love for Star Wars: The Old Republic!

The Art and Writing of Star Wars: The Old Republic panel kicked off promptly at 2:00pm. On hand were BioWare Principal Writer Drew Karpyshyn, Senior Writer Hall Hood, Lead Concept Artist Arnie Jorgensen and Senior Concept Artist Clint Young. Also on hand, moderating the panel, was David Collins from LucasArts, who is involved with The Old Republic on the sound and audio team.

While the discussion was lively, the highlight of the session was easily the piece of “live” concept art created by Clint Young during the panel. The visuals were striking, depicting a green tone to a mountainous landscape veiled in haze, and dominated by a large star in the background. The finishing touch was a small armada of ships in the atmosphere.

Although not officially revealed, we can’t help but think this is a peak at a planet not yet revealed. Take a look at the concept art in-progress in our gallery below, and let us know what you think. Do you know what planet that might represent?

The same panel will have an encore presentation on Saturday, so perhaps they any reveal something about then? We’ll be there just in case :)

Today we also had a chance to sit down with Drew Karpyshyn and Hall Hood for some interviews, and will be bringing those to you in the coming days!
