Choosing a class in an MMO can be a daunting task. Even for long-time MMO veterans, the choices in a new game aren’t always clear, and you never really know how the gameplay or other attributes of the class will play out until you put significant time into it.

Some players will choose their class based on their desired combat role, such as healing, tanking or damage dealing. Others might try to make a decision between a ranged class or a melee class. And in the case of Star Wars: The Old Republic, the story itself may be a great influencer of your decision.

As for me, that class is the Sith Inquisitor. I knew from the start I wanted to walk around with a saberstaff and dominate the Republic. My first look at this weapon came from watching Episode 1 (shudder) and Darth Maul. Granted, it wasn’t the sole reason. I was more drawn to it because of the abilities I’ve seen with it, both before and after I was lucky enough to land a Game Testing spot.

So what gave you that final nudge to choose your main class? Was it the story,  combat role, style, or something else? Let us know!

What was the greatest influence in choosing your main class?

Blue Milk & Cereal: Are You An Alt-o-holic?

You’ve probably crossed one of these people before, or you may even be one yourself. They exist in every MMO, and there’s no indication it will be any different in Star Wars: The Old Republic. I’m referring to altoholics.

For those who might be unaware, an altoholic is a person who loves to play many different characters, or “alts”. They might work one character to max level, then begin on another. They could also level characters at the same time, spending equal time on them as they work towards the level cap.

There are many reasons players might do this. For example, they might have different characters with different crafting and gathering professions so they don’t have to buy from others. They might also have a character for each of the three game specializations (healing, dps, tanking). In the case of TOR, BioWare is hoping people will want to see the stories attached to different classes.

I don’t classify myself as an altoholic, but I have a feeling The Old Republic will make me one. I’ve always had one character at the level cap that I solely focus on. But TOR is giving us eight different classes. Eight stories that will be completely different from one to the next. Sure, classes will follow the same leveling path, and the similar planet arcs. But, I’d play them just to see the individual class story lines they have.

Are you an altoholic? Or do you keep your attention solely to one character? Maybe, like me, TOR will change your ways? Why, or why not? Let us know!

Blue Milk & Cereal: Should RP-PvP Server Rules Be Enforced?

No day would be complete without the breakfast of Jedi: Blue Milk & Cereal.  Every morning, the team at Ask A Jedi will get Force-induced thoughts coursing through your head with delicious issues from around the galaxy! Join in the discussion below to make your voice heard!

It came as no surprise, at least to me, when RP-PvP servers were confirmed for Star Wars: The Old Republic. However, I was a bit disappointed by what BioWare Senior Community Manager Stephen Reid said in the revelation:

Please note, the ‘RP’ part of the RP-PvP designation will be a suggested style of play, not a mandatory one. What that means is, if you feel someone isn’t roleplaying, reporting them to Customer Service will not ensure action on their account. We will also not be enforcing naming policies or similar.

BioWare has stated over-and-over that the story will drive this game. You’ll fall into the game and start to care about your character, and your companions, when you make tough decisions. With that mindset, it’s almost too easy to fall into role-playing mode. Why wouldn’t they go the extra step to assure this experience is whole for the players who want it?

Now, there’s no doubt the scale of such enforcement could present a logistical and budgetary issue for them. Having likely hundreds of servers and millions of players could create a very heavy volume of work. But, if you want to bring the RPG back to MMO, which BioWare does, wouldn’t this be a great way to do it?

So, do you think there should be rules enforced on these servers? Do you think BioWare will at least provide the guidelines? Maybe, you’re just happy to see these servers will be there. Let us know!

Blue Milk & Cereal: Will You Participate In Guild Events?

No day would be complete without the breakfast of Jedi: Blue Milk & Cereal.  Every morning, the team at Ask A Jedi will get Force-induced thoughts coursing through your head with delicious issues from around the galaxy! Join in the discussion below to make your voice heard!

Guilds, clans, warbands or whatever they decide to call themselves are a foundational part of the social aspect of the MMO genre. Your guild becomes your in-game team or family and they are the people you can turn to for help, support or just an overall good time.

In Star Wars: The Old Republic it will be no different. These are generally the people you’ll group up with for Flashpoints, PvP  or even just for leveling. Eventually, you’ll be meeting up with various members to take on Operations, when you’ve reached max level. It will take a well-practiced team to overcome these challenges, so having a good guild an familiarity between members is essential.

But that’s not all there is to it. Some guilds, most likely long-established ones, organize and hold various events for their members to take part in. It may be something as simple as a PvP tournament or it could be something more extravagant that takes multiple days to accomplish, like a guild anniversary celebration.

If given the opportunity, would you participate in these events? Have you participated in these events before? If so, which ones were fun? Post below any ideas you or your guild, have come up with…if you can share! ;)

Blue Milk & Cereal: Have You Joined A Guild Yet?

No day would be complete without the breakfast of Jedi: Blue Milk & Cereal.  Every morning, the team at Ask A Jedi will get Force-induced thoughts coursing through your head with delicious issues from around the galaxy! Join in the discussion below to make your voice heard!

If you’re a veteran of the MMO genre, you’ve no doubt been part of a guild somewhere along the way. Guilds function not just as a social construct, but become your in-game team with whom you practice and coordinate to progress in the multi-player game. Wether your guild was made up of family, friends or strangers, players make guilds and guilds make the community. They’re an an important part of being successful in these games.

Which brings us to today’s topic – are you, or will you be in a pre-release guild before Star Wars: The Old Republic launches?

Maybe you’re a part of a guild that has played other games together for years, and are making the move to TOR. Or perhaps you’ve met some like-minded folks on the official forums and decided to band together. Then again, you may just be waiting until you’re in the game to pick who you want to play with.

If you’ve followed BM&C, you’ll know my answer to this question: Yes.

Without going into detail, I joined Reign back in March of this year. The guild will be a year old this month, and like the rest of us, we’re all just waiting for the damn game to get here.

So let us know…  Have you found a home already for when SW:TOR is released? Maybe you’re still waiting for when the game launches, or maybe you’re still up in the air on the idea.

Have you or will you join a pre-release guild for TOR?
