Blue Milk & Cereal: Have You Played On The Public Test Server?

No day would be complete without the breakfast of Jedi: Blue Milk & Cereal.  Every morning, the team at Ask A Jedi will get Force-induced thoughts coursing through your head with delicious issues from around the galaxy! Join in the discussion below to make your voice heard!

One of the things the official Star Wars: The Old Republic forums are good for is discussing the game with fellow players, and keeping up with developer responses to posts. That is, if you stay out of General Discussion. The General Discussion forum as as much a cesspool of negativity as it is for any MMO. Here you’ll find mostly complaints ranging from purported class balance issues to unreasonable downtime schedules.

Sometimes, the complaints are a bit more focused on the progress of fixing bugs in the game. BioWare themselves have said that they are in heavy patch mode, to make sure they can improve TOR as much as possible as quickly as possible.

What perhaps you don’t know, though, is that BioWare has a Public Test Server for TOR. You can play and test upcoming patches before they make it to the live servers, with a chance to weigh-in on things it might fix (or break!) You can access this PTS directly from the main login screen of your launcher client.

My guess is that most of the complainers aren’t even logging on to the PTS to try and give feedback before it goes live. Now, to be fair, there’s no way to use your current character on the PTS, so testing can be limited. Still, it’s nice to check out things like UI improvements, improvements to ability delay, and so on.

So today’s question is simple: have you played on the Public Test Server? What has been your experience if so? And if not, why not?

Have you played on the Public Test Server?

  1. I am doing good working on one character on live servers. When I can transfer characters from live to PTS then I will do more testing. Not to mention I have been bit nervous how much download I will have to get on the PTS, I am on country internet it’s pretty slow.

Needless to say they are hurting themselves with not having a transfer serves or at least pre-mades of higher levels to take spin on. It seems to me it’s the higher end content that needs the most work.

  2. ScytheNoire says:

    Why not?

    Can’t transfer live characters.
Don’t trust BioWare that it won’t ruin my regular game install.
Don’t want to have to deal with the horrible customer support should something go wrong.

    Three good reasons right there.
Plus nothing in the upcoming patches about actually fixing the horrible PvP problems at 50 or having an LFG tool.

  3. I have limited play time as it is I don’t want to spend the little time I have playing on the PTS.

I think they can get some better testing done when they allow Character copy and things will be fixed faster and maybe properly tested when that happens.

  4. Well, no transfers of my toons nor pre-mades really hurt. Also, those very quick patch cycles…good for live games, horrible for the test server, ya really dont get to test things out enough

  5. As many others have stated, I simply don’t have the time, however much I may want to help BW improve the game – and it certainly doesn’t help matters with there being no character transfer.

  6. Two words: Character Copy. And I would do it. If they had premades I would definitely give it a try.
