Ask A Jedi: Legacy System, Magenta Crystals, And Operatives

Stand aside Master Gnost-Dural! The Ask A Jedi crew is here to answer all of your burning questions about Star Wars: The Old Republic! Powered by R2-Db’s question and answer feature, we will answer the highest rated questions each and every week. So sit back, relax, and let us drop some knowledge on you, Ask A Jedi-style!

The most popular question over on R2-DB this week was posed by Ajamison. He asks, “Is there any more information on when the Legacy system will be fully implemented instead of just allowing a Legacy name and Legacy leveling which currently does nothing?”. Indeed, this week got us our first update from a developer about the upcoming plans for the Legacy system. James Ohlen (Game Director) gave an interview to Gamespot about the Legacy system and other game features. Very generally, here is Mr. Ohlen’s vision for the Legacy system:

We wanted to have a system that encouraged players to create alts and to play the game through the different story paths. So the legacy system is meant to do that.

More specifically, here are some details from the Gamespot interview about the Legacy system:

…and then you gain legacy experience points and legacy levels, and with legacy experience points and levels, that gives you–that allows you to unlock abilities, perks, a whole slew of different advantages, essentially, that all the members of your legacy tree will be able to enjoy.

[…]

…and it’s something we want to push towards players who enjoy the level-up game. It’ll also be beneficial to the end game, but it really is going to have a lot of abilities that make leveling up even more enjoyable and allow you to customize your leveling experience.

TOR has really made me an “alt-aholic” so the idea of more perks as you level more and more characters really appeals to me. Like a lot of people, I plan on making at least one character of each class and I suspect I will be utilizing the Legacy system perks rather extensively.

The Magenta Adgean Crystal has sparked quite a bit of controversy recently, and ♦♦gnarf posted a question to R2-DB asking, “How do I get the Magenta Adegan Crystal?” Well, luckily for him, Ask a Jedi (along with Reddit) were able to find an answer for him. Acquiring the materials to make the crystal requires a decent amount of time to complete a puzzle. It will also require a group of 4 level 50 players to defeat a boss at the end of the puzzle. If you don’t want to be spoiled on how to acquire the crystal, do not follow the link, but otherwise check out the guide on Ask a Jedi.

Fresh off his NFL playoff victory on Sunday, Eli asked of the R2-DB community: “Is Concealment worth it?” For those that do not know, Concealment is one of the Imperial Agent Operative talent trees, specifically the sneaky, stabby, and close-range one. I have not had the opportunity to dive into the Imperial Agent yet, but I would offer the same advice that Shikao gave when he responded to the question:

First of all, if you really enjoy it then don’t change. We play games to have fun, right? =]

Truer words were never spoken. It may sound obvious, but I would really stress that you play the game to have fun! Don’t worry about having the best stats or min/maxing your character. I promise that you will enjoy your character so much more if you just play the class and talent spec that is most appealing to you. Playing a class that is not fun, but has the “best DPS” can be fun for a while, but at the end of the day you will regret not picking the class that you wanted to play (believe me, I know).

That being said, here is a pretty good thread on the official Imperial Agent forums about the Concealment tree that should help with your rotation, talent tree needs.

  1. So, by the time the legacy system is in place most of us will already have multiple 50s thereby rendering any benefit moot. Grats on talking up a pointless system that won’t be implemented in a meaningful time.

    • I think you are thinking the benefit has to be used while leveling or before making the new character. I am hoping some of these benefits may pertain to after you level adding to your already 50s in some way.

    • your wrong did you not read that it says it will be helpful at end game too? and you have 8 slots on a server and i doubt you got them all to lvl 50 already

    • I am one of the people that always says, the game is only (now) a month old and we should be patient and give them time to add content, mechanics, features, etc. But I have to agree with this poster. I was thinking about this the other day. On my server I have one of each class on each side (4and4). I’ve been playing the Imp side. One is almost 50, two are early 30s, and one is 26. The update with legacy features is coming out in march. I would really love it if at least I could level my Rep toons with the legacy perks. But I fear I will already be well into the Rep toons by then. I guess it isn’t a big deal, since the incentive is to play alts, and I already do that. Maybe after I get the first toon to 50 I won’t play as much (which would be good!)

    • YiddishYeti says:

I dont understand people getting worked up about the Legacy System. Its something thats never even been tried before and people are mad it was 100% at launch. So bioware goes the extra mile and says “Hey, we know it sucks the legacy system wont be live at launch but we’ll go ahead and still allow you to secure your legacy name and experience.” So yeah, maybe you wont get a cool hairstyle, or 5% increased experience leveling all those alts. If thats a big deal to you, then im sure its 1 of a million things you dislike about the game.

    • So I guess every game should never add a new race or class because you would have to level up all over again…

    • ScytheNoire says:

All Legacy content should be applicable to existing characters. This should be a design rule. If their idea to stretch out the life of the game is to have people make alt’s, than that is a failure in design, like quite a few other things in SWTOR.

      • The point of the legacy system is not to stretch out the life span of the game it’s to get everyone to play the other characters. Even with story people will still focus on a small amount of the game and not experience it in its entirety.

  2. I think its a great idea. I work alot and have very little time to play, so by the time i hit lv 50 and experience enough end game content before having the desire to level another character it will be perfect timing.

  3. You forgot Bioware’s blog post saying that the Legacy update is in March.

    • I hope droids become unlockable, I specifically have not made a Bounty Hunter because I am waiting for the update.

      • Lord Paladin says:

Unfortunately I think you will be waiting a very long time (years) before droids eery become a playable class (if they ever do) simply because it doesn’t fit into BioWare’s storytelling design.

      • I don’t foresee droids for the same reason you don’t have Wookies, Rodians, etc. Bioware has stated that relating to those ‘alien’ races would be difficult, and animating and voice work wouldn’t be up to par with the current species. Droids would have the same problems.

        • That’s the lame reason because if that were true then no one would have been able to relate to R2D2, C3P0, and Chewbacca to name a few. The real reason was more to cut development time and focus on getting things done for launch, which can be seen clearly with Cyborgs being a race and not a appearance option.

  4. The game is about storytelling, which it accomplishes through the XP (leveling) system.
They’re incentivizing playing alts (the other stories they wrote), and people are… offended?

    • That’s the problem. MMOs are about forward character progression, not starting over at the end of a story to see a different version of it.

BioWare did something different, and that’s fine, but it isn’t going to fly with MMO players. Only BioWare players.

  5. Erm. Sorry mods, didn’t see the dates. Delete please–
