Should You Buy The Old Republic? VentureBeat Review

VentureBeat isn’t normally the go-to site for game reviews, but they do dabble in the business of gaming, and the investment in it. So when they do a review of a game, it’s usually got some of that meta-reasoning behind it. VentureBeat has covered TOR in the past during it’s development, so they’re not coming in blind to it, and now they’ve posted a full review of the game. They posit: Should you buy Star Wars: The Old Republic? Read on to find out…

To give you a perspective on their review, you need not look further than the first paragraph:

Blizzard Entertainment’s World of Warcraft could soon be feeling a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of subscribers suddenly cried out and started heading for a galaxy far, far away. Star Wars: The Old Republic is an impressive and easy to play new competitor from Electronic Arts that makes great use of the Star Wars license. It is the most promising new massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) since World of Warcraft claimed the genre’s throne seven years ago.

As you read on, it’s surprising how thorough and complete the 4-page review actually is. It’s obviously not an advanced gamer’s perspective, but does a great job exposing the initial strengths and weaknesses:

Having a computer-controlled buddy who assists in combat makes the game very accessible to players who are used to single-player RPGs. But it also creates unexpected dents in the difficulty curve. The early game feels well-balanced and offers a decent challenge. Upon gaining the first companion around level 8, combat all of a sudden gets a whole lot easier.

All in all, it’s worth a read to get a perspective we often don’t see when discussing TOR. Click here for the full read! Let us know your thoughts on their thoughts!

    Their, not there.

Even for bloggers, proper English is a must.

  2. Oh dear, “Computer-controlled buddy” What fresh hell is this.

  3. I agree wow is going down the drain and Swtor is the one who put it in the sink.
