One Million Subscribers – And Counting [UPDATED]

Well, that didn’t take long. An honestly, did anyone think it would? TOR now has over 1 million registered players – and growing. Quite the Christmas present for Electronic Arts!

BioWare Co-Doctors Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk popped by the TOR Community Blog to let fans and players know the great news. Their words are much better than mine could possibly be, so here they are:

Yesterday was quite a day here in Austin. We likely had the largest one-day subscription account registration process in MMO history – over one million people are now registered players of the game, and the number is growing rapidly.

As you might imagine, this presented a huge strain on our infrastructure and systems, but the good news is that we seem to be through the worst of it now thanks to folks working hard all day to serve our community. And as Greg mentioned in his earlier note, we’ve also been working hard on resolving queues – those being another side effect of the huge demand for Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ over the past week. We were definitely anticipating a very high load but if anything the demand for the game has only exceeded our expectations!

We’re very appreciative of your support and we look forward to surprising and delighting you throughout the journey ahead. To that end, we plan on letting you know soon about some cool upcoming content planned over the next few months.

On behalf of the Star Wars: The Old Republic team, Greg and I want to thank you very much for your support, and also your patience yesterday as the team worked hard to process through the huge volume of players trying to register.

Thank you,

Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk

Over the course of running Ask A Jedi, I’ve had the awesome privilege to meet both Dr. Ray and Dr. Greg, along with a majority of the Star Wars: The Old Republic development team. I am extremely happy for their success… they are people working as hard as you or I do every day, so any time you see that kind of work rewarded, you gotta be happy.

[UPDATED] Other interesting stats via USA Today:

  • Of the more than 3.8 million characters created, there are 550,000 Sith Warriors and 510,000 Jedi Knights.
  • Logged 28 million in-game hours – roughly equivalent to watching all six Star Wars movies, two million times.
  • Average more than five hours a day playing the game.
  • Killed more than two billion non-player characters in the eight days since early game access began.

Congrats guys! See you at 2 million next week! :)

  1. Over one million? I wonder how much by.
900k hard copy sales in the US alone, not counting EU and digital for both; how many people ended up not subscribing and/or cancelling/not doing it on the first day?

Hopefully it stays level and gets better, pre-release of Rift had “over a million”. I enjoy the game immensly and hope it isn’t just a flash in the pan.
