SWTOR.com Security Upgrade Coming Wednesday

Computer security is a topic of ever-increasing importance these days, and it’s not just about your bank account. Securing all aspects of your digital life, including your online games is becoming just as important.

We’ve all heard the horror stories of hacked World of Warcraft accounts, and today BioWare took the first step to improving player security on SWTOR.com. The cloud sensitive data detection to get security for their data.

Senior Community Coordinator Allison Berryman posted a bit of a “heads-up” regarding a security improvement coming to SWTOR.com after Wednesday’s scheduled maintenance:

As part of our continuing efforts to ensure account security, we’ll begin asking all SWTOR.com account holders to add security questions to their accounts on Wednesday, 9/21. After our weekly scheduled maintenance (which typically ends around 10:00AM CDT), account holders who log out and log back in will be asked to add these questions.

Eventually, these questions will be used to help verify your identity, so please use answers you are sure to remember.

This should be seen as a great step toward securing these accounts as we get closer to launch of The Old Republic, as this account will be your game account as well.

And we have no doubt that this isn’t the last we’ll hear about player security surrounding Star Wars: The Old Republic.

  1. Why should this “be seen as a great step toward securing these accounts?”

Given how these security questions are usually implemented, I have great concerns about their efficacy – they usually *decrease* security for those that need it most.

Just because they say it’s additional security doesn’t mean it must be a GoodThing(tm). A lot of the negative responses to my thread show how little importance people place on their privacy and security.

I’ve posted a thread about this here. http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=497038
