Blue Milk & Cereal: What Do You Expect From The Legacy System In TOR?

No day would be complete without the breakfast of Jedi: Blue Milk & Cereal.  Every morning, the team at Ask A Jedi will get Force-induced thoughts coursing through your head with delicious issues from around the galaxy! Join in the discussion below to make your voice heard!

Just a few days ago we finally learned about the long rumored, almost mythical Legacy system. A lot of community members are still not exactly sure what this system will bring to the game and how it will affect gameplay (or future play-throughs), but we do have some theoretical guidance from James Ohlen:

…At its core the Legacy system is about allowing players to create a family tree of characters. Family is pretty important to the Star Wars universe, with the Skywalker family having one of the most interesting dynamics in movie history.

The current beta build is said to only contain parts of the full Legacy system and it was already hinted that most of these additional features will be expanded on and delivered via a post-launch patch:

We already have plans for how we will expand the functionality of the Legacy System in one of our major post-ship patches. This will include being able to shape your Legacy’s family tree, and give you a reward for all those Legacy Levels.

As of right now, we do know that after completing Chapter 1 of the the class storyline, players will be able to gain access to the actual Legacy system and have all subsequent characters contribute to one shared pool of experience that will potentially grant us with rewards and bonuses. However, we do not know all the details and this gives us the perfect opportunity to speculate and ask our dear readers about their opinion on this system!

So what do you expect from a Legacy system in TOR? Do you like the idea of having a Legacy system? Let us know below by answering the polls and don’t forget to leave a comment to share your thoughts!

What would you like to see from the Legacy System that wasn't already confirmed?

  1. I’ve never had the desire to put my characters in a “family tree”. If I wanted a character to be part of a family I’d want other players to be part of that family, not just all my own characters.

    • THIS. It just… as an RPer, this just seems useless to the progression of my character’s story.

    • Have to agree. Though I’m pleased with the ability to add a last name, it’s silly to require all my characters to use it, and the requirement that I wait until about level 10 to choose it increases the likelihood that the name you want won’t be available.

  2. I want to see Droids as a unlockable race.

    • Not going to happen, droids are more considered tools than people by most people on both Imperial and Republic sides, you can’t really have a fun story where you’re basically bossed around all the time and nobody cares for your input.

  3. Don’t like the idea of Legacy gear, it reminds me WoW’s heirloom gear, and it only is useful to make a big breach between new players and old player, mostly on PvP, please, stay away twinking from this game.

  4. Personally, I think this is a great idea. I’ve never been a big fan of last names for characters and never understood why people get cranky at the prospect of a single character name, but I do like the idea of having something universal like this, for all of my characters. How many times have we MMO players passed by or grouped with our friends’ alts and not known it? This is a great way to say, “I’m so-and-so.”

  5. ReallyDeepMan says:

I’d like to see a way for my alts to focus on class quests more to level, to take some of the repetitiveness out.

  6. I wish they would name it anything but a family tree, my Twi’lek isn’t going to be related to my Zabrak due to fairly logical reasons. The whole thing seems poorly thought out, as if Bioware itself still isn’t entirely sure what to do with it.

And I do wish that there were at least other ways to get whatever cool perks will come out of this, so that people who don’t want to arrange their characters into a nonsensical family tree can still get whatever legacy unlocks there are.

    • Abner Ford says:

You can think of it as a “House” as you want, as I saw someone else point out before. Just like “House Organna”. And you don’t have to display it as a last name… hell, you don’t have to display it at all.

  7. I want to know about legacy system with multiple accounts.
Ex.: Me and a friend be of the same “family”, playing and garanting more points to our “family tree” (as brothers or so).

  8. I’m not sure why there is such a big ruckus about this Legacy System, It’s a great thing to be able to have. Not everyone will want this and I’m sure Bioware knows this. In the post he did explain that this can be turned off just like dark-side characters.

It is just the start of the game everything will be tweaked as we go along with playing this MMO for some years to come. personally I believe wholeheartedly they know what they’re doing

  9. This has the feel of creating your own “mini guild” in a sense – it reminds me of people creating private guilds in WoW or kinships in LotRO for extra storage shared across their characters. Hopefully this will unlock shared account storage, items that are bind-on-account (shared between all characters on that server), and such.

  10. Not opposed to the legacy system as long as the rewards are within rreason. As a min/max end game player I don’t want to be forced to re-roll tons of alts to improve my characters end game performance.

I am ok with race unlocks, heirloom gear, or other cosmetics. But I would rather not see an MMO turned into a solo game just to max my main.

    • Abner Ford says:

I agree, and judging by the rest of the gameplay decisions they’ve made recently (eliminating companion death, implementing only social racial abilities, etc.), I doubt they will make the bonuses anything beyond cosmetic/luxury type benefits. Perry A’s idea of shared account storage for characters is an example of that.

  11. I think too many people are hung up on the “family tree” thing. If you want to think of it that way, then fine. But the idea of it being more of a “house” — like “House Harkonen” in Dune seems much more accurate. People get too fixated on semantics sometimes.

I love the idea of the Legacy system and what little we’ve seen definitely has me excited to know more. Really a great way to reward alt-oholics with some vanity pets, mounts, and similar aesthetic options. No reason to believe it will be required for min/maxing in endgame progression or anything else. Seems like just another option for people who like to do different things in game.

    • true since a house can encompass all range of races which people should think of this system that way instead of a family oriented thought.

    • I don’t think people are hung up on things…I think they are concerned and intrigued…they have questions about it.

I hope it works out like you describe, sounds awesome for those who like alts, but until they define the system more, end game players like myself are gong to be suspicious, concerned..something along those lines.

  12. Legacy is a nice idea, but not at the expense of “one surname to rule them all”. I want to have seperate last names for my characters. If I understand this system correctly, I either have one last name or none on each character on a given server—Not cool.

  13. A couple days ago, from what we all knew, there were no last names. And hardly anyone was any worse for it (I wanted surnames, but I didn’t think about it post-character creation). Now, they have a surname system in, albeit a different one that was taken in a direction that no one would’ve expected, and people (specifically RPers) are crying out. They’re not commenting on the possibilities of the system itself (which are pretty awesome, if you think about it).

Granted, it would be preferrable to have an option to have different surnames for each character. But the idea of having a relationship between your characters is cool and can have RP benefits as well. Either way, if this allows me to unlock a Bothan or Nautolan, or perhaps a different ship or an account-shared companion, then this is a great idea. Not perfect, but still great.

  14. Capt. Jack Sparrow says:

“Your father’s lightsaber. This is the weapon of a Jedi Knight. Not as clumsy or random as a blaster. An elegant weapon, for a more civilized age…”
