Blue Milk & Cereal: Are You An Over-Achiever?

No day would be complete without the breakfast of Jedi: Blue Milk & Cereal.  Every morning, the team at Ask A Jedi will get Force-induced thoughts coursing through your head with delicious issues from around the galaxy! Join in the discussion below to make your voice heard!

On Monday, at the Second Fan Site Summit (#SWTOUR on Twitter), Game Director James Ohlen, responding to a question by our very own Lethality, re-confirmed that an achievement system will be in place when SW:TOR launches on December 20th. With the pervasiveness of achievement systems in what seems like every game nowadays, it comes as no surprise that BioWare will be including the system in SW:TOR.

Services like Gamerscore on the Xbox, Trophies on the PS3, and achievements in other MMOs are so second nature to us now, that we expect them to be present in every game that we play. So from that point of view, I’m glad that BioWare was able to get them in for launch.

Personally, I’m not out to gather every achievement point that I can find in order to get my total as high as it can go. I think my Xbox Gamerscore and World of Warcraft Achievement point total on my best character are both around 3000 or so (disgraceful, I know). However, what I do like is getting those rare achievements, the ones that are difficult to complete and that not everyone has. It is nice to be able to point to those achievements and say “Yeah, that’s right. I did that.”

So how about you? Do you all try to complete every achievement out there and get the best score possible? Do you complete them if you can, but you don’t go out of your way to find them? Or do you just not care about achievements at all? Let us know!

Do you consider yourself an over-Achiever?

  1. I tend to be lackadaisical about such things, even when they provide in-game bonuses. Rarely the bug will bite, or I’ll be feeling too blah to do anything else, and I’ll go hunt down some achievements.

  2. I’ve never cared about the point total, but I do enjoy hard achievements with actual rewards. Stuff that actually makes you feel like you achieved something, and shows others through a title or mount or whatever that you did. e.g. I was one of the first on my server to finish the Insane grind in WoW.
I was an early raider in WoW. Once it became super easy for everyone to get top-notch gear, I guess that Insane sort of achievement replaced the badge of honor that a full set of top end gear had been in vanilla WoW.

  3. Yes I do love achievement! I was around 9800 before cataclysm with 40 feats of strenghts or so. But it’s not an important part of a game for me, I mean, if it was not on swtor it would not be a big deal. However, it’s a good news we will have it!

  4. I picked Meh, but I tend to pick one or to interesting ones and try and get these. In WoW I tried to go for the pet achievements, for example

Being one of the key features I was hoping would make it in for launch, I voted Yes! I was just shy of 13,000 achievement points on my rogue before I quit WoW and I’ll definitely be looking forward to getting as many as possible in SWTOR!

  6. I enjoyed achievements in LotRO, but only because you got titles and such for them. Chasing points just to chase points though? Points that mean nothing and have no bearing on your character? No thanks. Sounds like a dog chasing its tail to me!

  7. I voted other. I love the achievment system and am very very happy it is in. However, I don’t chase them and try to get the highest score.

  8. I don’t care about achievements. If they provided a meaningful reward however I would be more inclined to go after them.

  9. I’m right in between the poll choices of “Yes! I have to get the highest score!” and “Meh, I get them when I can but don’t put in too much effort”.

Much like Pashtun said in his comment, I love the system and go for a lot of them but don’t set out to get every one possible.

  10. I love achievements, and I am totally pumped that they will be present at launch. In WoW, some of my fellow guildies are very competitive with their achievement score, and I am among them. Achievements add a fun social meta-game!
