Blue Milk & Cereal: How Many Operations Should TOR Have At Launch?

No day would be complete without the breakfast of Jedi: Blue Milk & Cereal.  Every morning, the team at Ask A Jedi will get Force-induced thoughts coursing through your head with delicious issues from around the galaxy! Join in the discussion below to make your voice heard!

One of the most important parts of an MMO is the end-game. It’s that time period after your character reaches the level cap (in the case of TOR, level 50) and the normal leveling, questing and storyline are over – or at least on hold until a contnet patch or expansion. The quality and quantity of this end-game content is what holds a large majority of subscribers and becomes the climax of the MMO experience. As we recently learned on the new Operations page, BioWare is not going to let us down in this department. One particular quote stands out:

Please note, that even though the Eternity Vault is featured prominently here, it is not the only high-level Operation for you to experience in Star Wars: The Old Republic. More will be revealed…

Clearly, we’re going to see more than the Eternity Vault, and if you look at the picture on that page that follows this quote – we can see that it hints at an Operation linked to the Hutts. This is great news for those who were a bit worried that there wouldn’t be enought raid content to start. As a compariosn, inudstry leader World of Warcraft had just two true raids when it launched (Molten Core and Onyxia.)

Personally, I think having 2 or 3 full-size Operations at launch is ideal. It would provide enough variety for those players who make it to end-game ahead of others, and give BioWare enough time to ease into their content patch cycle. It is going to be very interesting to see what BioWare has in store for us. Luckily, we don’t have to wait much longer!

  1. I believe they announced at NYCC a 2nd operation already. I doubt they will come out with a third at launch but it would set the bar high for any games coming after it.

  2. I’m inclined to think that two operations is considered the normal standard (assuming you’re going to have this kind of end game content at all). Adding a third might hit that golden mean. Enough to keep the majority of the players occupied while the devs get ready to drop more content.

    • I agree 2 is ideal. With you being able to do them on normal and hard modes, it should keep us busy awhile. Plus there is 15 Flashpoints(instances/dungeons)that can also be done in hard mode. I think Bioware will do a good job of keeping up busy before a 3rd Operation is released.

  3. gamerladyp says:

I really don’t want the temptation to leap into end game to be too strong. I’d like to take my time getting there and see my guild takes its time. As a guild officer there is nothing quite as frustrating as having a bunch of max level folks pushing for raiding when you are still trying to play new content. I’d like to see people enjoy the journey a lot more in this game, giving the devs plenty of time to work on quality of life features as well as additional content.

  4. I think two is enough to start with. I would prefer it was no more than two as I would like to see if Bioware is as committed to this game as Trion Worlds is to RIFT. Trion has been patching game content like no other mmo before, I hope Bioware brings the same agressive attitude towards end game content updates as Trion.

So I say two operations and test Biowares ability to patch content.

  5. Onyxia was one chamber with one boss, how does that qualifies as a “true raid”? World of Warcraft had only ONE true raid at launch and that is Molten Core.

As for the question I believe two TRUE raids is quite sufficient for launch.

    • I wasn’t playing WOW when it launched, but I still have good memories of Molten Core. I thought that was originally a 40 man raid and the instance you had to go through to get there was like a mini-raid…

IF anyone still has the Eye of Divinity (deleted priest only item from Molten Core), in the World’s End Tavern you can see a hidden character named Ricole Nichie standing next Haris Pilton. I hope SWTOR has little easter eggs like that!

Back on subject… I like the idea of two TRUE raids, but I think 1 complete raid and 1 build up over time raid will be plenty for a game doing a Christmas launch.
