NYCC: Star Wars: The Old Republic Panel Wrap-Up

The official New York Comic Con panel for Star Wars: The Old Republic has just ended, so we thought we’d wrap up all of the highlights right here in one place for you!

The panel consisted of Game Director James Ohlen, Writing Director Daniel Erickson, Live Producer Cory Butler and Senior Community Manager Stephen Reid. All in all, between the panel and the Q&A it was a good showing!

Credit goes out to the guys and gals at TORWars and Corellian Run Radio for their Tweets to help compile this info in real time! Here are the highlights:

  • Random: 200,000 posts per week on official forums
  • 15 Flashpoints at launch – all the way through the leveling experience
  • Only 1 game, no secret game in the background (dig @Blizzaard)
  • New Operation involving the Hutts!
  • The 3 confirmed Warzones are Alderaan, Huttball and Voidstar
  • Collector’s Edition has access to VIP club at the respective fleets
  • Expansion is already under way (via comment by Daniel Erickson)
  • No “dungeon finder” re-confirmed
  • Extreme light/dark side points will affect appearance, but not abilities – for now
  • No player bounties, but has been discussed
  • Global release date is December 20th
  • New Gameplay Trailer – Signs of War

The gameplay trailer is obviously part of the Friday update, and I must say is impressive. We start to see a lot of the cinematic characters in-game besides Malgus, and the very end showcases what appears to be Ilum, and some incredible PvP combat with walkers and everything! It’s a must-watch!

  1. to help with context, I believe WoW launched with 18-19 dungeons ranging in run size from 5 to 40 people in format. I think 7 of them were targeting the levels below 30 (Scarlet Monastery had that lowbie side so maybe 8).
For end game, it really was only Upper Blackrock, Molten Core and Onyxia.
I might be wrong, it was sooooooo long ago

    • WoW didn’t have a single 40 people raid at launch. Molten Core was only patched in almost half a year later.

      • Nope. Molten Core was in on day 1. Onyxia was in on day 1.

        • I thought they were day one … and the 5 mans were bugged so you could take 40 into them :)

          • I don’t think it was a bug so much as they simply didn’t bother with a limit. Ah the days when 10man Strat or Scholo was common because 5man was horrendously difficult for most PuGs. :)

      • Actually, World of Warcraft released with 5 “raids.” UBRS (15 man), LBRS (10 man), Scholo (10 man), Strat (10 man), MC (40 man). They later reduced the number of players needed for each. This is apples and oranges, however.

SW:TOR has flashpoints and operations that change depending on what choices you make during them. You could potentially play an instance 10 times and have different outcomes and/or story dialogue depending on what class/moral choice each player makes. Some of the differences will be subtle (as far as dialogue), some huge (different bosses). Never been done before in an MMO as far as I know.

  2. I’m really excited now for that illum open world pvp!

  3. No secret game in the background? Huh?

  4. Also, they seem to have pretty much confirmed Pureblood Sith Inquisitors, which has been the subject of massive debate for months on the SI forums.
