Blue Milk & Cereal: Do You Have An Internet Usage Cap?

Internet speeds, bandwidth and general access varies from continent to continent and from country to country. For some people, downloading a huge game client like TOR, patching it and playing the game is only a question of mere time, without any worries. For others, it’s a little bit tougher. They have to keep an eye on their monthly usage limit and make sure to not go over it. Why? Some internet providers now charge additional money for transfer overages,  in addition to throttling the internet speed itself.

As BioWare Senior Community Manager Stephen Reid said in this forum post, he understands that some will find it hard to download the 27GB client for Star Wars: The Old Republic. Moreover, European Community Manager Chris Collins came out in an earlier forum post stating that if people were  invited in the current beta, they would have to re-download the whole game client again, upon the arrival of the latest build. That’s a potential of nearly 60GB of data!

So the question for today is the following – do you have an internet usage cap? Will the cap limit your ability to download TOR? Let us know below!

Do you have an internet usage cap?

  1. I do have a cap but it’s so large that I have to work really hard to go past it, which is kind of hard to do because I am a heavy downloader.

    • I’m in the same boat Chronium. I have a cap, but it’s far too big for 27g to really affect it.

      • Yeah I think mine is about 80GB, and with my… questionable speed, it would technically be impossible to get to that in a month.
I’m hoping that there is going to be at least 24 hours beforehand to download the game client, because even though my speed is pretty amazing for my location (South Africa), it’s snail pace compared to first world speeds.
But hey, at least I managed to get a copy of the game here, so whatever happens I’ll be glad to be playing on launch day.

    • Ya mine to, I even have Onlive and I’m still way below the limit

  2. We don’t have those in France, thank you very much. Download limit only existed for the very beginning of the internet here. To just talk about it right now sounds ludicrous.

  3. I have a cap, but it’s a daily limit. I can download around 1.2gb a day or I get my bandwidth throttled. So downloading the game is a no go for me.

    • My husband and I have dealt with this situation as well. (Although not a problem on the unlimited services we are on now) On occasion he has to download larger files for the job he dose. These file would push if not go over our limits. If you contact your ISP you can often get them to agree to a one time lift on your limit for that file transfer. You can’t do it often and you might not get them to agree. It dose work most the times if you are firm but pleasant in how you ask. It might be worth a try.

  4. I have ‘unlimited’ internet, I think they cap it at 50gb so i should be fine, as long as i only have to DL it once!

  5. I live in a proper country, so no :P

  6. I also have a cap but it’s 100GB’s. I’ve rarely ever gotten close to it even with my 10Mb connection.

And to those without a cap. I hope you guys get to keep it that way. Most ISP’s and countries have been looking to implement these.

  7. You forgot the option for comcast users “Yes, I have a cap and if I go over it twice, they cancel me and won’t let me have internet with them for a YEAR, /notolerance”

  8. Capped at 100gb / 3 users in my house, so downloading tor is a no go for me. Hope my amazon order bulldozes through the christmas rush!

  9. Dont have a cap, but only 5M speed for the moment, wich I think is a little bit low. However I’m planning to go to 20M before TORs release.

    • If it’s DSL be sure the local area phone lines can support 20M speed. Companies are happy to charge you for 20M even though you will most likely never get that sort of speed. And when you discover your being hosed for a 20M connection and never get that speed they will point to the little bit in the contract where it says they don’t actually promise to get you 20M it says up to 20M but will depend on technical issues. (IE phone line quality and other user traffic)

  10. Bloodangels says:

It seems like i need to move, here in the US of all places i have a monthly cap of a mere 5gb per month. I wish i could have half of what you all seem to have but i live in the country (about 40 mins north of Washington DC)and only options are either wifi (via verizon)which i have) or satelite internet and as often as i lose my signal via satelite tv far too often for wind blowing, i couldn’t imagine trying to play a game.

    • I live in a rural setting and was relegated to a satellite connection for a long time it’s was awful. I feel your pain. We got relief from a local WISP (internet over radio basically) internet provider. Consider looking into it. We are some what limited in speed due to local phone lines at the transmission station. 1.5mb, but our latency is super low 20ms to 80ms on a bad day. It is also very constant, and comes with nearly no limits to your activity unlike satellite. This makes downloading a bit slow, but game performance is excellent. You are looking at a similar set up cost as you did with your satellite system but it can vary. However monthly costs are as cheap or even lower then standard DSL. Our WISP set up paid for it’s self in less then 3 months due how much less per-month it was then satellite. Good Luck

  11. ScytheNoire says:

Canada is internet hell. Damn government gives companies monopolies to allow them to charge insane prices with crappy service. Wish we had some competition, but the corrupt politicians (Conservatives) are in the pocket of the Canadian Telecom’s. We’re so screwed.

  12. I had a chance recently to upgrade to a 50meg download speed but it had a cap of 50 gig on it. Their system was down so I couldn’t find out what my normal download per month was so I passed on the deal and am so glad I did. My normal download is 60-70 gig per month with peaks up to 90 occasionally. I don’t watch tv, i get all my shows off the internet and i’m sure that is one reason my usage is much higher than most.

  13. Our ISP has a monthly cap of 250GB. They say 99% of their customers never reach the cap. I just checked my usage yesterday, the 30th of September, and we were at 350GB O.o

But to answer the question, no way. This game will not make us hit the cap.
