Phase 2: Guild Alignment Begins!

Sun Tzu said, keep your friends close, and your enemies closer. With that in mind, the Guild HQ has advanced to Phase 2, where picking up to 3 Allies or Adversaries nets you a higher chance of ending up on the same server!

Back in March we initiated our Pre-Launch Guild Program, where members of the Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ community could search for already established guilds or register one of their very own through the Guild Headquarters page. We are thrilled to announce that we have begun the second phase of our Pre-Launch Guild Program!

With Phase 2: Alignment, we are introducing new features which allow guilds to set their allegiance with other guilds in The Old Republic. Now a guild leader, along with members who have the proper permissions, can select up to three guilds as either Allies or Adversaries, depending on their faction affiliation. Qualifying guilds that are marked as Allies and Adversaries of other guilds will have the highest chance of being placed in the game together, allowing these guilds to coexist on the same server.

Another feature being implemented with Phase 2 is the ability for guild leaders and members with the proper permissions to invite friends to join their guild via email. You can start recruiting new members today!

To learn more about guilds in The Old Republic, check out the Guilds Game System page for details, and to search for or join a guild, visit the Guild HQ now! Also be sure to visit the Guilds FAQ for answers to commonly asked questions.

Of course this adds some exciting possibilities for role-play guilds to form an alliance and adversary of equal numbers (as 4 guilds would be linked), or for a very strong grouping of 3 or 4 guilds to a side to combat the enemy. There are a lot of variables here, and of course this announcement is yet another indicator of how imminent release is.

I know that I like the system – but I’ve seen some people detract from it as well, especially given the “assignment” of servers. How do you feel about the Allies and Adversaries system?

  1. WoW!!! I love it, we are getting close:)

  2. I think it’s an interesting idea but overall once the game launches I believe the implementation of it is going to fail in the end. I think Bioware is forgetting that people don’t like being forced to go somewhere.

    • Then why would they participate in the program? No one is obligated.

    • People aren’t. Guild leaders can decide to roll on whatever server they want at launch – phase 3 would just serve as a guide at best, making sure that people who know they want to play together roll on the same server.

      • @Skott, that goes against everything that Bioware has stated.

        Here straight from the FAQ’s

How will a server be chosen for my guild?

When we begin placing guilds on servers, we will take into account all the information that has been provided, including the server type and the allies and adversaries you have selected. We will make reasonable efforts to place each guild according to their specified preferences but cannot make any guarantees given the anticipated volume of guilds (among other factors).

        • *ahem*
While I do not dispute that that is written in the FAQ, may I draw your attention to a recent yellow post made by DavidBass:

“We’ve seen some confusion today with the launch of Phase 2: Alignment that we’d like to clear up. As stated in the Guild FAQ, the Pre-Launch Guild Program allows you to register your guild before the game releases in order to be placed on a server with your Allies/Adversaries at launch. At no time do we force you to join a specific server, either as a guild or as a player. During Phase 3: Deployment, we will assign servers to qualified guilds, effectively reserving their guild name on those servers and ideally placing them alongside their Allies and/or Adversaries. Guild members are free to accept the offer in-game, or they can choose to ignore it and join whichever server they’d prefer instead.”

Take what you will for this, I merely seek to provide clarification.

          • If they wanted people to exercise free-will then the process of assigning a server to a guild would be pointless.

          • I don’t get it? If you don’t want to be assigned to a server as a guild, simply don’t register your guild….Like every other mmo. You are making a problem out of nothing.

  3. Sounds awesome. I’m going to check the SWTOR site for more details. Thanks for the heads up.

  4. Thank GOD! I’ve got a group of about 40 people all pumped and ready to play TOR, but about 15 of them all want to play Republic side, while the other 25 want to play Empire. Finally, this can reconcile everything!

I wonder how this will affect in-game features? Can you chat with allies/adversaries using some “Meta-Guild Chat” feature? Hrm.

    • It doesn’t reconcile the fact you can’t group-up and perform any group-based activity (PvP, operations, etc) with the opposite faction, and I doubt they’ll let you ‘guild chat’ with adversary guilds.
You’ll be on the same server as your opposite faction friends and that will be about it. You probably didn’t need this ‘alignment’ program to achieve that result.

  5. This is pretty awesome, I’m glad that Bioware is giving some attention to guild to guild relationships. I’m excited to see where this will end up.

  6. I can’t wait to find some ally guilds. :)
