Blue Milk & Cereal: Will You Be The Tortise Or The Hare?
No day would be complete without the breakfast of Jedi: Blue Milk & Cereal. Every morning, the team at Ask A Jedi will get Force-induced thoughts coursing through your head with delicious issues from around the galaxy! Join in the discussion below to make your voice heard!
In nearly everything people do, it comes down to who did it first. Who won the race? Who made the first movie? Who was the first to walk on the moon? Questions like these always spark debate and draw the attention of the average, everyday person. You almost never hear the person who finished second. All the glory is reserved for number one.
When Star Wars: The Old Republic launches, we are all going to be level 1, and all starting from scratch. People are going to have the chance to shoot for the first level 50 of their server, class and perhaps even the world.
So, that raises the question: Will you be the tortoise or the hare?
I’m sure many people will plan a vacation around launch time, or at the very least call in sick to get their hands on the game, and hit the ground running. To them, it almost becomes a competition with others – either literal or figurative – to be that first player walking around with Level 50 by their name. To do this, they’ll most likely be hitting the space bar to get through the dialogue faster, ignoring a majority of the voice acting.
On the other hand, there will be others who want to enjoy The Old Republic’s universe and be immersed in it. They are not trying to be the road runner and max their character. They want to take it easy and explore the nooks and crannies of each planet. The idea is to find all the secrets a planet may hold, see how high you can get on a distant peak, find all the datacrons, and enjoy the game as a whole. They may even play multiple characters, trying to get them all to Level 50 at the same relative time. To them, speed matters not.
At the end of the day, it comes down to how do you want to play SW:TOR. No matter if you have energy drinks prepared and order a couple pizzas for an all-nighter, or are actually planning a full night of sleep the day the game releases, you’ll be able to play however you like.
So, how are you planning to play your first character? More like the tortoise, or hare?

I plan on leveling my non-combat skills as fast as possible. That is the only way to see if the schematics are what i want to leverage for my toon.
I too usually level my crafting skills as fast as I can. I most likely will not be playing enough each day to even worry about if I will be “first” in anything though. So is the life of a parent :p
I’m a parent too but they are old enough and the wife is supportive itll be fun!
Yeah, that’s what I want to do as well. To see if what I’m making will be beneficial to me. I don’t want to make something, only to turn around and vendor it right after that if possible.
I used to race to caps. Sure you achieve something special when it happens, however its quickly forgotten by the community. I’m personally going to level at a decent pace this time around, which I would estimate above average pace. My main focus will be nailing down important aspects of the game to me, such as strong pvp knowledge. So ill be leveling via quests whilst in and out of warzones.
I am in the same boat, but this time around my schedule won’t allow me to play enough to worry about getting server first 50, but i hope to be above average in getting there, my guild will need me for PvE.
As a law student I have no choice but to go slow. But the times I get to play I’ll be as productive as possible.
Second, people can do what they wish but I personally feel those who race to cap are “doing it wrong”. That’d be like going to Disneyland and saying you’re only going to go on Space Mountain over and over again, even though there is so much more to do! It’s your call though if that is all you feel like doing.
Story has been talked about a lot, but it truly is one thing that Bioware does right! I plan on taking full advantage of what it has to offer.
If the story is as unengaging as it was in Dragon’s Age 2 it won’t really matter. I hope the story is good and pulls me in.
Im an explorer. I plan to go digging around where I have no reason to be, just to see if the devs left anything for me there. I also plan on maxing out crafting as I go, and this takes time, so no rush. Racing to the end is fine if thats your goal, but I typically only do that with alts 4,5,6 once Im more familiar with the game.
I don’t see a point in leveling to the endgame quickly. If the game launches with only a single endgame raid or even only two or something, then what would be the point in churning though content and finishing the game before Bioware has a chance to take a breath from launch, let alone add more end game content?
I’m planning on leveling my main character to lvl 50 ASAP so that I can begin working on min/maxing him early. Then I’m going to create alts to go through the story at a nice easy pace.
I will take my time, make sure each choice I make is the right one. The one that leads down the pat of darkness. If I rush, I know I will miss something. I will explore each world and find each Holocron, bonus quest, hidden npc and smash everything. I wont leave a zone until I am 100% done that area even if I out-level it in the end. This is a BioWare game, which will no doubt have many gems worth taking time to explore.
If you rush, you will miss something important, I promise you.
Hi Shockum! If you don’t reply to this I’ll be mad :P
Personally, I really enjoy the richness of story in the Old Republic era. I want to level quickly, but getting into the story in SW:ToR is my top priority.
I waited for it to show up man. Hey buddy!
I am a huge star wars geek, lets start off with that. And I am seriously looking forward to the game. What I am not wanting to do is this…
When I was still playing WoW regularly, it was around the time WotLK came out, I leveled 3 toons, back to back all the way to 80, and burnt myself out. Said, “I’ll never do that again.”, what happens? Cata comes out, I did the exact same thing again, this time, with 5 toons, back to back.
The difference between WoW and TOR though is that there is alot more story I am interested in, alot more Star Wars, where as WoW, I could care less what happend to Joe Piddle’s farm, I just wanted the xp.
I figure I will take my time, that doesnt mean I wont suffer from my usual altitis, but I have no intention of rushing.
