Blue Milk & Cereal: Will You Play Your Main Class In Testing?

No day would be complete without the breakfast of Jedi: Blue Milk & Cereal.  Every morning, the team at Ask A Jedi will get Force-induced thoughts coursing through your head with delicious issues from around the galaxy! Join in the discussion below to make your voice heard!

As most of our readers already know – the “expanded closed beta” of Star Wars: The Old Republic will begin September 2, which is this upcoming weekend. BioWare is telling us that a lot of people will have a shot at playing the game during the month of September and beyond, at least on the weekends. Needless to say, players are excited. In fact, according to various forums threads, many players are planning to use the beta to try out various classes and perhaps reaffirm their initial class choice. Still others are dead set on playing their main class, so they can start gaining knowledge about it, and get a “leg up” on the competition.

That’s not the whole picture though. Some players have decided to not play the beta at all, even if they get the invite, so they don’t risk spoiling any of the story for themselves. Another portion, perhaps the largest one, will play the opposite faction – to avoid spoiling any of the class and faction story arcs for the real deal.

Personally, I’m with the last group. I am not going to touch the Jedi Consular class and will instead roll an Empire character for the beta, if I’m lucky enough to get in. That’s not going to stop me from having fun and it will also give me a perspective on the opposite faction. However, things may change as the temptation to fall for the dark side is rather strong (also considering most of my friends are aiming for the Sith Empire)!

So the question is – if you get into Game Testing either for the weekends or otherwise, will you play your favorite class?

If you get into testing, will you play your main class choice?

If you won't play your main class, what will you do?

  1. I’m actually going to use testing as a practice for speed leveling to 50. I want to see if I can hit it in a day when the early access starts.

  2. I want to test out the game since the waiting is so hard ^^ but I´ve decided to not sign up and rather play the fully polished game and have an awsome 1st experience.

  3. My main will be a Jedi Knight Guardian. I will play this at my pace with out waiting on anyone and just going top speed. I will also have a Trooper that I will have with my Guild group. He will be for the group flash points and such so I will move him from flash point to flash point. I usually have more time than others in the guild as we are a causal group so this will give me time for the two different toons. This way has always led to me having two toons max level near the get go. And we have enough people to run more than one group as well so it is nice to have options as to what class to bring.

  4. Jatlantis says:

Yeah, definitely play my main – Sage/Seer.

  5. I plan to play all Classes (if I can) at least through their Origin Worlds. It is great to *think* I know what class I want to play, but until I know how the in-game mechanics actually “feel” and how the story flows, it is difficult to actually say which Class will pull me in.

I want to play a Smuggler – but what if I don’t like the Cover Mechanic? What if I don’t like how it plays? What if I don’t care for how they did the snarky attitude? What if a different Class just “feels” right to me? No final decisions until I actually get my hands-on.

  6. I voted other as I plan to play all the classes if I can to decide who I will roll with for my main.

  7. I would try to figure out which AC i really want to play. I want to play a Trooper my first time around but i’m not really sure i can stomach carrying that BFG for 50 levels.

  8. Every character I play is my main during the time that I play them. I’m not the kind of player who has a literal main. I don’t do the one character to end game asap thing. I’m an altoholic, and I’ll definitely be playing as such once I get in (whether that be beta or the normal release).

I’m sure there will be a class or two that settle in as my favorite class to play, and I do have a couple of classes that I’m more excited about than others, but I know that I’ll have at least one of every class rolled within the first 2-3 weeks. I’ll probably spend the majority of the first expansion doing nothing but leveling and rerolling new characters. Who am I kidding, I’ll spend every expansion they put out doing that very thing.

  9. I plan on rolling either a shadow or a gunslinger if I get chosen for the weekends and keep my trooper experience for the actual game. The only reason I may ditch that though process would be to get practice with my trooper for when the game is released, but by then, they may revamp the trooper into something different and I just ruined my story. Guess I may just flip a coin and go with it.

  10. As of now my main will be a Tanking Sith IQ. I am planing on testing Jedi Consular to get a feel for its mechanics. I don’t want to rush this game to see how fast I can get to 50 on my first play through (I will for alts more than likely). I will also test the crew skill that I think I want and see if my logic is right on what goes with what and if it is a good fit for tanking. I may try out a smuggler or the agent since I have no ambition to play them once the game is launch just to see if my reasoning is correct.

  11. I am still undecided as to what my main will be. I thouht i had it narrowed down to Smuggler or Bounty Hunter, but I like what i saw from the troopers in pvp. So I think I may just get a small dose of a few that I might play and see which I like better.

  12. I plan to make what my main will be so I can take my time figuring out how I want her to look during character creation. That way I can hopefully make her faster (and thus get in to play faster) when it’s the real deal. I also want to take a look at the skill trees and figure out a rough idea of where to put her first points. After I do that I will try out some of the other classes that I’m not so sure about so I can decide what I want my second character to be.

  13. Yes. If I don’t like it, I want to know right away so that I can switch.

  14. I remember back in WoW, playing from 60 to 70 and having the time of my life, I then remember going back to wow normal and tottally got bored with it till the expansion comes out.

I understand this wont happen here, but I caution anyone on the race to 50, once the game release, the wow factor might have left.

My goal is to get to level 10 on as many charecters as I can without over doing it obviously. I figure I dont mind ruining the easy part of the game. this way when you decide to play your main, you may go back to something else thinking,Wow that was more fun.

  15. ScytheNoire says:

I’ll play the opposite faction, but play the mirror classes that I am interested in.

  16. Abner Ford says:

I’m going to be playing an Agent at launch, so if I get into the testing, I’ll be playing a Smuggler. Learn the cover mechanics, get some Han Solo story action, not spoil any Empire storylines.

  17. I’m curious that noone is worried that his/her initial first pick may be a wrong choice. To be sure about that, playing this class at beta would be a good idea.
In addition i don’t see playing this class at beta will be spoilering, because it will still be to you. Furthermore, you can pick other dialog-choices when the game goes live and take a first hand look on how that impacts the story.

So, hopefully there is no need to worry about self-spoilering at swtor.

  18. Lord-Maknoe says:

As much as I want to play my own class I don’t want to spoil the story. But I don’t want to spoil the story of any classes I know I’m going to play as a fact, but also at the same time I don’t want to play a class that I don’t want to play. So right now I’m thinking either A Jedi Consular with Shadow AC (assuming I get high enough in lvl for an AC), a Bounty Hunter with Powertech AC, or a Smuggler with Gunslinger AC. Assuming I get into testing I say either Consular or Hunter! :D

  19. SorcererBiggz says:

Big build up for this game is story, and why would I spoil the major addition to this game by playing my faction/class?

You play what you already pre-chose as what you will do on Live servers, I guarantee your not going to like the game as much until the end-game. Which you’ll have to wait for that to be even remotely as fun as it’s suppose to be.

  20. I’m not even going to play my intended faction. I want to save the story I want to enjoy for the main play through.
