SDCC 2011: Star Wars: The Old Republic Panel Recap

Comic-Con has long been a venue for fans connecting with the actors and creators of their favorite things… so it makes perfect sense that BioWare might use this venue to do some of the same!

During the panel, for the first time, BioWare introduced some of the actors who will be voicing characters in Star Wars: The Old Republic!

New Jedi Consular romanceable companion revealed named Nadia, voiced by actress Holly Fields

I wonder if they’re going to fully copy Rift and hand out keys to fan sites for guaranteed access.

  2. TheDarkKnight says:

Just watched the blog. Will do updates tommorow. 1am and I am too tired to update. :)

  3. Lethality says:

I’m fairly dead against giving companions that much depth of control. It’s one thing to have companions at all… but another one completely to have to program him as a requirement for maximum proficiency at end-game (presumably)

    • chronium says:

that was the first thing that came to my mind when they announced the game was going to have companions.

    • The complexity of adjusting the support needed from companions at various character levels and even varying play formats ( PvP vs PvE) concerns me.
At one point there was talk of companies helping get thru some world events when friends/guild mates are not on. Seems lie too many moving parts would be in play

    • I disagree. I found the ai tactics in Dragon Age to be pretty simple to set up and very effective, and they are usable in raids or PvP warzones, so they won’t affect that type of endgame either.

      • “are” = “are not”

      • I agree with Kevin here. The AI for companions in DA was fantastic. You could mostly ignore it and be fine, or really fine tune it and get them to behave just how you wanted. Sounds perfect to me.

Since companions are for every character, they should be a bit more compelling than just pets. Also, as stated, we can’t really use them in competitive end game, like ops and warzones, so doesn’t concern me.

      • Lethality says:

Sure, but… what is the point of making the AI so customizable and programmable… if it’s only going to be used in the basic questing game, and not in the competitive or end-game areas? When in fact you could just leave the companion on auto and be just fine?

If they get this AI customization working the way they want, there’s nothing to say they won’t change their minds about putting companions in end game or pvp. And that’s my main issue with the road they are on.

Also, making this kind of design change at this late stage of development? Will it feel tacked on? Will it cause more harm than good since it wasn’t part of the design documentation in the first place?

  4. May want to add that the official launch window is now Holiday 2011.

  5. TheDarkKnight says:

•Solo players have an entire endgame planet to themselves

Did they say anything else about this?
