Blue Milk & Cereal: Is TOR Going To Be Your First MMO?

No day would be complete without the breakfast of Jedi: Blue Milk & Cereal.  Every morning, Joanis and the team at Ask A Jedi will get Force-induced thoughts coursing through your head with delicious issues from around the galaxy! Join in the discussion below to make your voice heard!

I still remember my first MMO. Like many people, my first MMO was World of Warcraft. To this day, it pains me to look back on my first year playing the game.  It took me 10 months to reach maximum level, and even then I had no idea what I was doing.  It was unlike anything I had ever played, and it quickly became the world where I spent a great portion of the following six years.

If you’ve never played an MMO before, something specific always draws you in. For me it was a world that I already knew a lot about. I had played Blizzard’s Warcraft strategy games for years. Once WoW was announced, I was eager to experience my favorite game world in a different way. However, if it hadn’t been for the Warcraft universe, I can safely say it would have taken me much longer to get on the MMO train.

For many future TOR players, this will be their first MMO. The Star Wars universe is richer and more developed in history than Warcraft will ever be, guaranteeing it will have a pull just as strong as WoW did for its followers.

Is TOR going to be your first MMO? What kept you from playing MMOs before? Or are you an MMO veteran looking for the next big thing? Discuss!

Pretty much this.

  1. My first MMO was Dark Age of Camelot. I haven’t found a game that I like quite as much as that one. TOR looks to be very close tho.

  2. Nope.. played plenty of other MMO’s other than this one- oddly never played WoW though as I never managed too get into it :)

    Jono

  3. My experience began in DAoC and I can honestly say I will never find a game like that again. However, I am a Star Wars fan and have been ever so eager to play this game since October of 2008. Hey! I’ve been leading the same guild now for two years and that sums up my excitement.

  4. My first mmo was everquest…in those days it took 10 months just to find your way out of the starter city into the wilderness….ahh the good ole days…

  5. If you count MUDs, then my first MMO was actually a MUD, Age of War. (Still around, actually! ageofwar.org). After that… several other MUDs, then my first “real” MMO was Final Fantasy XI.

Put in six years of that, joined WoW right before the Ahn’qiraj gates opened, played City of Heroes on and off for a year, ended up in Rift. Also put in solid stints in Allods Online and Shin Megami Tensei IMAGINE Online. Was in the beta for Final Fantasy XIV, which was helpful since I figured out not to waste my time or money.

So no, TOR’s not my first MMO by a long shot. But it’s my most anticipated one in probably ever. :)

This won’t be my first MMO, but it will be my dad’s. I haven’t been able to get him to play a video game with me or my brothers since NHL 95. I think on some level, *everyone* has wanted to be a Jedi at one time or another.

I’m pretty sure that SWTOR will be a lot of people’s first MMO. I just don’t think those people are on askajedi.com months before a release that hasn’t been announced yet.

Absolutely. As I like to say, most of the people who will play this game aren’t even on the forums to bitch about it yet ;)

I think that first MMO you play… that feeling you get… can never be duplicated and no matter how bad the game turned out, you’ll always have fond memories of things you think were great about it.
