Blue Milk & Cereal: What Do You Think Social Points Will Be Used For?

No day would be complete without the breakfast of Jedi: Blue Milk & Cereal.  Every morning, Joanis and the team at Ask A Jedi will get Force-induced thoughts coursing through your head with delicious issues from around the galaxy! Join in the discussion below to make your voice heard!

BioWare announced some time ago that Star Wars: The Old Republic will feature a unique currency known as social points. So far they’ve only announced that the currency will be awarded for completing group conversations throughout the game, and people who have gotten to play TOR have seen social points awarded at the end of in-game conversations with NPCs.

Even though it’s easy to understand how social points will be awarded, we have no idea what they’ll be used for. I can only think of a couple things. Maybe they’ll be used to buy certain items that will increase your rolls to make conversation choices, or unique clothing to wear around.  Outside of these sorts of things, I have no idea.  I can only hope they don’t include rewards for social points that actually make your character more powerful.

What do you think social points will be used for? Do you want them to reward things that affect your gameplay? As always, we’d love to hear your thoughts below!

Social Points, Affection Points an Dark Side Points

  1. They can’t have any real signifigance in terms of impact on my character’s combat ability, it wouldn’t make sense. I say aesthetics, or things that make you better in group conversation situatiosn.

  2. I honestly think that they’ll be used for matchmaking etc.. “Auto MatchMaker” for Flashpoints etc..

  3. Chronium says:

Well since Bioware confirmed that Bliz the Jawa has appearance unlocks it would make perfect sense to have them be unlocked through social points.

  4. I voted for real in game effects. Some people advance their game by Raiding, others by crafting, others by grinding achievements, maybe some by grinding space combat, why not allow people to specialize their efforts in “social activities”?

  5. I would think its used to increase your chance to talk in a conversation

  6. Brax Kedren says:

I wonder if it has something to do with their Social Network?

  7. Jumbles says:

I’m pretty sure they’ll simply effect how your companion views, interacts, and is influenced by you.

  8. I think it would be a great idea if Social Points were used in some sort of “in guild currency” or so. I don’t think that’s what BW has in mind, since they have announced that guild progression will not be at launch. But if this said guild progression would be linked to the social points, well, that would be interesting.

  9. My hope is that Social Points would only have application in some way to do with socialization, per the title of the currency. Perhaps in a purely aesthetic manner, but I think it would be cool to have relevance to minigames and social activities like dejarik, pazaak, or sabacc in some way (perhaps in the random match up).

As I think about it, my mind runs wild with many potential minigames and distractions that would make great time sinks in SW:TOR based off of games in the Star Wars universe. See here: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Gaming
