GameSpot Video Interview – Composing the Music of The Old Republic

We got an extra dose of Friday goodness today thanks to GameSpot!

Sticking with today’s official Friday community update on the music & sound of Star Wars: The Old Republic, GameSpot has posted an 8 minute piece containing commentary and music filmed at the legendary Skywalker Sound in Northern California.

Several composers discuss the challenges and the excitement of not only writing their own pieces for the game, but also exploring extensions on familiar and legendary Star Wars themes composed by the great John Williams.

We have some really, really talented people working on this project. I think it’s going to sound spectacular. – Will Roget, Composer

I can tell you that we are lucky to have the pedigree of a LucasArts involved in this project. Being a part of the LucasFilm family, music and sound are in their DNA. Not every studio would be willing or able to invest this kind of effort in the music of a video game. The full orchestral score you see in the video would be replaced by racks of synths and samplers on most projects. I believe we are in for a real treat with this aspect of the game expereince!

UPDATE: SW:TOR community member Chronium noticed that some of the sheet music was intended for Corellia! I’d say this is a pretty good chance we’re going to see Han Solo’s home world in The Old Republic. Read the thread on the official forums here: http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=170426

Again, if you’re a fan of music production, this is a must-watch!
